Detroit's status as a Leafs rival

Anyone who says you don't have rivals because you aren't competitive has absolutely no idea what they're talking about. Does it intensify if you're competitive? Of course but that doens't mean teams don't dislike one another if they aren't fighting for playoff spots

:handclap: that is so true. In the CFL the Hamilton Tiger Cats and the Toronto Argonauts have a great rivalry and the labour day game is always close, no matter what the standings are that year. Toronto could be in first and Hamilton in last, but the game is always competitive and the teams and fans hate each other.

Are the Wings on their way down? Until I see the actual standings where they're at or near the bottom, I'll refrain from saying they're on a down swing. They have the ability to pull competitive players out of a hat like a magician does with a rabbit.

They made the playoffs and we didn't! Didn't fair too well, but, they still made them, unlike our Leafs.

Yeah, I'm not holding my breath on the Wings being a bottom feeder anytime soon.

Red Wings have been in our conference for one season and our division for one season. Can we give it time?

You do realize that the Leafs and Red Wings were in the same conference ever since conferences were introduced in 1974? The Maple Leafs were in the West until 1998. They've only been apart for like 15 years..

for sure, aren't all like that?

and the older you are the more intense

Not really. Some games you watch and you can tell the Teams don't like each other, usually between top teams. The Leafs don't really have that currently.

Opposite for me, it seems less intense the older I get.
Detroit hasn't been a rival for quite some time, I imagine their fans feel the same about the Leafs.

Oh what great insight you have brought into this discussion. Nothing to refute , usually people "laugh" at others when they don't have an argument. Oh well

It's in ALL sports no matter where in the standings the Leafs never want to lose to Montreal and Montreal never wants to lose to Toronto. How many times do those players need to say its a rivalry for you to understand? "Canadian rivals" has more to do with fans than actual teams being rivals such as Toronto vs Vancouver. Thats purely made up by fans . You don't erase 70 years of history(Leafs vs Habs) because the Leafs haven't won a cup since the 60's

You're right I should have said,

Anyone who says you have rivals when you aren't competitive has absolutely no idea what they're talking about.

You're speaking of the Fans, the Players want to beat everyone.

What is so funny is how low expectations must be for the Maple Leafs to consider them on the upswing and how high they must be for the Red Wings to consider a team perpetually in the playoffs on the downswing :laugh:

Could it just be you don't understand what being on the upswing or downswing mean?

*sigh*

Just listen "It's always nice to win it outside of Montreal and the best place to win it is right here in Toronto" . But you're right, its all in the fans heads

 did you actually sigh?

Your quote is from what 50, 60 years ago and I'm betting since the Cup was there the Team was competitive.

Way to ignore the rest of the video where Phaneuf, Lupul and Gionta all talk about the rivalry .Yep, its all in the fans heads right?

Yes I did sigh because you clearly just don't get it and its painfully obvious. Still nothing to refute as well

I understand very well, keep on sighing.

The Leafs are on the upswing, from 2nd last to 8th last in 4 years. At their current pace they might make the playoffs before the turn of the decade. Meanwhile the Red Wings will still be a bubble team given the pace of their downswing

The rivalry is a bit dormant these days and it's not only what's on the ice but off the ice as well. The Leafs have tanked almost as badly as the city of Detroit has, while the Red Wings have boomed like the city of Toronto. Are we still Great Lakes rivals anymore?
