Detroit Redwings Downfall

I'm not a big fan of building with small players at all, but talent is talent. Literally, the arguably 2 best playoff performers of the last 15 years are undersized wingers that make over 8 million a year though. Any discussion of Debrincat in this thread is stupid, hes not part of the problem at all.

Compare those names to the names Ottawa moved and youll see why Ottawa is a bit ahead right now. Yzerman also traded Hronek and Bertuzzi in 2023, if youre going to bring those names up, you also have to give the assets they were traded for time.

Your listed group from the wings vs prime Karlsson, prime Mark Stone, Hoffman and 22 year old Zibanejad.... do you really think its comparable?
Debrincat is 5'7/5'8 not 5'10/5'11 and not a debatably generational talent. 3 inches is alot. Would you consider 6'0 and 6'3 the same?...

Ottawa had the cheapest and worst owner in the league. That hired amateurs and spent no money. There are plenty of excuses to go around. The sens are in the playoffs now the Redwings aren't. Every team has an excuse.

That was the look on my face as Detroit dominated and outshot MTL for 60 minutes. Gonna be fun watching them in the playoffs... can't wait!!!!

Dude, it doesn't matter if Detroit outshot Montreal 100-3. They lost.

After they lose in 4 can we talk about how special it was?

Even if the Habs get swept, they will have been to the Cup Final, completely bottomed out, and gotten back to the playoffs all well after Yzerman was hired in Detroit.

Biggest game of the year...

Top 4 D by minutes - Seider and Erd were top 2 and that is great for the future. Next 2 were Chariot and Petry. Ajo was not even close to Top 4 minutes at 13 minutes.

Top F by minutes - Larkin, Raymond, Kane and Debincat. Kasper under 15 minutes and less than Tarasenko.

So when it mattered most some of those promising young guys took a backseat to some pretty unspectacular veterans like Petry, Chariot and Tarasenko. Very promising for Seider, Ed and Raymond though!

It feels like the Wings rebuild in the worst way possible. 1. They drafted badly. 2. Decided to stop their Rebuild too early(the Leafs did this but they got Marner, Matthews and Nylander in one swoop). 3. So then added a bunch of old guys making them just good enough to be in the playoff mix.

I feel like they should do scorched Earth next summer. (but can the town/market whitstand it?)

I should change my avatar to one similar to yours to represent how special I am.

You should change it to this, he's even in red wings colours!

If they have to rebuild the rebuild, then Yzerman needs to be canned. It's unacceptable that this team isn't in the playoffs by the end of year 6 of his tenure.

Amazing insight. Thanks.

Keep living in fantasy land

But Y’s tenure in Detroit has been nothing but a failure

His trades/signings haven’t been nowhere near good enough and his actions have lacked vision. He’s been building a good team, not elite team

Detroit fans love to cry about poor luck in the draft. Well if you think you’ve had bad luck in the draft that’s not the only way to build a team. You lack a francise level forward, quality depth. Do you cry about it or are you then more aggressive on the trade front or with your signings? There’s been multiple franchise to great players moved during Y’s tenure and he’s opted to be left out of every one of them and instead gone for the bad players/declining players. Building a team that’s not good enough to compete, not bad enough to draft difference makers. Which has lead to the problem where Detroit is.

They are in no man’s land. Some Detroit fans still think about the amazing future? Why. We see multiple much more promising rebuilds in the East taking place at the same time

Then you hear how it’s been only 6 years….. and we have to give him more time, 3-4 years before the vision is in full force. Do Detroit fans not realize how old Larkin, their 1C is? He’s 29y next season

What kind of a rebuild takes the entire prime of your 1C and the window is supposed to open up when your 1C is past his prime? Leading you to a situation where you need to turn around and find your 1C for the Cup window Y has ”created”. The player that’s the most difficult to find

Y’s rebuild in Detroit has lacked vision and ceiling. He’s building a good team, not a contender

You need to look around the League more if you think a 2nd round pick, 24 year old Defenseman, averaging about 14 minutes a game in the do or die two most important weeks of the season is an exciting pick or testament to great drafting.
It doesn't need to be exciting or great, but it also wouldn't be better if they felt they needed to lean on Johansson-Holl instead of Seider/Edvinsson's pairings.

1. They drafted badly. 2. Decided to stop their Rebuild too early
When did either of those things happen?

Wings out there playing Seider 27 minutes like it's Game 7 of the Playoffs which I guess it was. A 24 year old "kid" cited two posts above being praised for playing on the penalty kill played 13 minutes. I said Wings probably should still be tanking back in 2022-23, but looks like they're gonna pick between 8th and 16th for the fourth straight year instead. Guess they just gotta keep waiting for more 24 year old "kids". Well on track for a dynasty.

Failing to see how it's AlJo's fault that the organization is obsessed with playing D according to their handedness.

As soon as Petry's bum ass came back they couldn't wait to bump AlJo down to the third pairing even though he was undeniably better on his off hand with Edvinsson than Petry is on his actual hand.

So I guess your solution is to give that third pairing, featuring Justin f***ing Holl, more time?

They're playing with house money

Trust the Yzerplan!!!!

Turns out it is way more difficult to build a contending team without already having a beast all around number 1 d man and a prime goal scorer, and then you also score one of the biggest draft steals ever by getting kucherov in the 2nd round. Not to mention a favourable location where people want to play and stay and take below market value because of the taxes.

People blew smoke up yzermans ass for so long man. are detroit fans starting to finally see this dude aint a god gm? Hes more likely just average and got some lucky breaks in tampa?
