As opposed to Pittsburgh, who is in the position Detroit was in in about 2015 or so...
If Pittsburgh is in 2033 what Detroit is now it will have been a massive failure. Hopefully pens bottom out hard after Crosby/Malkin retire. Heck even this decaying senior citizen pens team is better than the Yzerplan year 6 wings.

Yeah and 2015 Detroit with decaying senior citizens was better than bottom feeders too... That's kinda the point.

Also, dunno what you think Detroit did outside bottoming out? They had one of the worst records in the last 30 years in 19-20...

If the owner had to nix the Trouba and Stamkos acquisitions then I would be even more concerned about the rebuild, SY and his decision making.

His first round drafting has been excellent (relatively) as were the extensions he negotiated, EVERYTHING else...meh.

Pretty sure it was Trouba that killed that.

Mistake IMO. Should've kept losing with Lalonde. This gets you 15th overall and Radmi Mrtka.lol

Todd can't do much in playoffs but he's actually a very good choice to turn around a struggling regular season squad.

Talbto, Campbell, Petry, Mclelland... Some Oiler love in Motown!

Been that way for a while. From head scratching FA signings to coaching decisions he’s been awful

He was entirely propped up by Al Murray and the scouting staff

Yzerman has been bad at the draft table

He’s a name only legend that’s it. Not front office material
yzmernan got lucky drafting russians he needs to go back to that

He's better than Lalonde, he's better than Quinn, he's better than Hakstol.

After that I don't have anything good to say about McLellan.

Todd McLellan? The Yzerplan continues to deliver.

Would be interested to see LA/EDM/SJ fans reaction here. Seems like his reputation is quite mixed

Well, when we hired Travis Green the fans of every team he ever coached hated him.

I suspect the guys that are available were usually fired from their old jobs so the lingering impression of them tends to be pretty poor.

Not that Travis Green has proven anything in Ottawa yet.

Sometimes young teams need a vet coach. They probably hope he’ll bring some structure or at least get some more buy in then they were getting.

Yeah, and what about if they drop in the lottery every year and the drafts are weaker ones? You got lucky last time with Crosby and Malkin, just as the Oilers got lucky with McDrai, great chances are you don't get two really good players super close together like that in the future. Even with the Oilers, they still haven't won a Cup with two of the best in the game, and look at the other rebuild teams, most of them haven't done anything. Heck, even with our long losing run here, we still have more Cups and playoff games in the past 30 years than all the other so called rebuild successes, with the exception of maybe the Pens.

Getting top picks is also harder than the last time the Pens rebuilt, as you are more likely to lose out on 1-2 overall even if you finish down there than you are to win.

Let's say Detroit made the playoffs last season and this season unfolded the way it has, would those running Detroit down consider that good, just because there is no longer x amount of years since playoffs?
