Last time the Tigers were in the playoffs, they played an ALCS game against the Red Sox at the same time the Red Wings hosted a Tuesday night game against Columbus — not the home opener, just a throwaway October game. The Wings game still sold out.

Say what you will about distraction, but 2000 empty seats at the home opener is a huge step backward from what the Wings once were. That team needs to get its act together before it gets worse.

The Tigers had the largest playoff attendance ever at Comerica yesterday...the baseball game started at 6:00 and the the hockey game was 7:00.

The games you referenced 11 years ago were 4:00 start (baseball) and then 8:00 start, no overlap.

This Tiger team didn't have any business making the postseason let alone being one home win away from the LCS (ECF equivalent). They are on possibly an all-time cinderalla run if it continues.

It's definitely a big reason for the hockey game not selling out mroe than the Red Wings' trajectory and not just an excuse.

I always wanted to go to a Wings game in the 90s (dad is from Detroit and we would visit plus the Bruins were awful to watch), but it was IMPOSSIBLE to get tickets during that era.

With scalping being fully illegal at the time and the second hand market being tied to their original face value, you just couldn’t get into the rink.

Jeez, it's like other sports don't exist. Detroit's baseball team is in the playoffs, so the focus is on them. Took away from the Red Wings attendance for sure. A team like Toronto probably wouldn't sell out either if Toronto Blue Jays played in a playoff game in town same night.
Bro we were selling out when Toskala was our #1 goalie and Matt Stajan was our #1 Center. Leafs will always sell out, people have mentioned the Tigers game but an original 6 team being unable to sell out the home openers ? Had it been another market I don't think it's a big deal, considering it's O6, a bit of a red flag.

They still have the 4th highest attendance on that list LOL

It's playoff baseball, one of the best times of the year. There's more to watch than hockey in the US

There are 4.3M people living in the Detroit metro area. Regardless of whatever else is happening in the city, it's not a good sign if they can't find 19-20k people fill a hockey arena on a given night
