Montreal
Montreal gets

Jonathan Ericsson
Andreas Athanasiou
Riley Sheahan

Detroit gets

Alexei Emelin (25% retained)
Noah Juulsen
Jacob De La Rose

It helps Detroit with their cap management (basically because of the Ericsson vs Emelin retained), receives a legit prospect to become a top 4 RHD, a cheap & young C in De La Rose.

Montreal receives Ericsson, which is not a good contract but pick up Athanasiou who fits like a glove with his speed. Also, they strengthen their 3C spot with Sheahan (in that case, Desharnais is bought out).

How I see it

Emelin (25% retained) >> Ericsson (3Y @ 4.1)
De La Rose << Sheahan
Juulsen = Athanasiou (or slight edge to AA)

Cap relief for Detroit definitely has value too.

After the trade, both lineup looks like (or close to?)

Zetterberg-Larkin-Abdelkader
Nyquist-Nielsen-Vanek
Tatar-Helm-Mantha
Miller-Glendening/De La Rose-Ott
Frk

DeKeyser - Green
Kronwall - Smith/Emelin (he can play RD too)
Emelin/Smith - Marchenko
Sproul

Pacioretty-Galchenyuk-Gallagher
Lehkonen-Plek-Radulov
Athanasiou-Sheahan-Shaw
Danault-Mitchell-Byron
Carr/Andrighetto

Beaulieu-Weber
Markov-Petry
Ericsson-Pateryn
Redmond

AA is a huge part of our future and is only traded if there is a young Top 4 RD coming back which is neither Emelin or Julsen so no thx

Np thanks not trading AA unless an upgrade on our top 4 most likely a top 4 pairing RHD with AA included in a package deal Emelin does us no good.

Totally understand that! I hoped to convince Wings fans to part with him on taking Ericsson at full price for a retained Emelin.

He has this year and next (can be exposed to Vegas too). At 25% retained, he'd carry a 3,075 cap hit

I would do it. I really like AA however I think with the signing of Helm we can use him as a piece to move one of our bad contracts. I don't think Emelin is an awful player...have not watched him a ton though.

EDIT: However, I really really do not like Ericsson.

So Detroit gives up 2 nhl players plus Ericsson and get back 1 prospect, a depth prospect and D-man who is not that much of an upgrade over Ericsson?

I'd rather not move a contract just to move a contract, especially if it costs us AA.

Well, it depends how you view it (I do respect your opinion!).

Detroit gives up 2 nhl players ( Sheahan, you're right.. AA might not be on the opening roster, could be!)

+ Ericsson --> not that much on an upgrade.. Emelin is a far superior player than Ericsson + the contract thing. This has value.

Detroit lineup (as I posted, I might be wrong) seems complete without these 2 ''nhl players''.

Detroit gets a potential 4 top RHD. I know Detroit wants that D now, but it's not a bad idea to already have it in the pipeline. He's maybe 2-3 years away to become that guy.

Exactly!!! Neither AA or Mantha should be used just to unload E's contract. They both have way too much potential for such a short term gain.

JE will go on LTIT and/or be picked up by LV(either him or howard as every team loses one guy and detroit wont be putting anyone good up)

AA and sheahan are much better than Juulson and the other kid

Hell no. We don't need to give up players for more cap space for Holland to waste on mediocre craptastic players.

Please Stop.

Why would Detroit need any cap space?

We can fit this current roster under the cap and start a season just normal.

Doesn't move the needle at all for me as a Habs fan. Sheahan would simply block McCarron. Ericsson's contract is toxic imo, the kind you avoid at all costs in a cap world.

And to the OP, the DD buy-out ship has sailed - this is his last year. Dude's already 30 - that shocked me! Plus, I think Emelin's value is depressed on here because of the sheer volume of Habs proposals he features in - 100% by my unscientific reckoning. Realities of cap situations notwithstanding, retained down to 3M, I think he's rosterable on just about every blue line in the league.

Exactly we will be fine cap wise, Though i wouldn't mind trading JE just not with AA included though.

How will they drop the $4.9M that they are currently over the cap?
My understanding is that a team must be cap-compliant by 5:00PM on October 12 before players are placed on LTIR? Did I misunderstand the rules?

To be honest, i have no idea what to make of the official rules.

Maybe someone knowledgable will help us here.
