Justin Holl it is!!!

Who’s in Buffalo tonight? Detroit has a scout who lives in Niagara area on the Canadian side, but he’s more of an amateur scout. He’s NOT in Buffalo tonight. He’s in Ottawa.

Anyway.

Byrum would be the guy Detroit would likely be after. He’s what they need most right now, as they’re desperate for a 3rd Dman who can consistently create pace, and get the puck where it needs to go. It makes the most sense from a Detroit perspective.

If it’s Cozens, that means all Detroit is doing, is pushing forward their progress quicker, than waiting for the production from Kasper and Danielson in 2-3 years. I’d assume one would likely be in any deal for him, with something else. Not sure how that makes Buffalo any better today though??

Someone who does make sense for the Sabres is Michael Rasmussen. I’ve been hearing teams are sniffing around him lately, because many believe he’s gonna become a core player for the next 5-7 years and he’s very hard to play against. At 25, 25-32 is Prime age for big forwards to start producing and we see all the little things finally happening for him. If he is in a Top 6, good bet he’ll produce. He’s never gonna be a PPG player but he should settle into a very hard to play against 40-50 point player in a Top 6 role, who you can move into other roles for matchups.

That’s who makes Buffalo harder to play against. Guys like him. I still think he ends up in Calgary or Winnipeg (if he’s moved) because he doesn’t have trade protection, they’re both looking, and his contract is great.. Was asked about him at a Medicine Hat game when I was out there recently, because supposedly his name had come up in Calgary AGAIN. Who had interest in him during Hanifin negotiations before last season.

Every manager would have interest. I just don’t know why Detroit would move him now, after all the years developing him. Just as it looks like it’s gonna happen for him.

He’s the exact type that Tampa is always after around the deadline and pays stupid prices for.

Managers love these big forwards. They just hate waiting 5-6 years for them to develop. It’s why we see teams go after them around 25-26 though. If there’s one to go after this year, it’s Rasmussen. Wins battles on the walls, has hands in front of the net and creates space for skilled line mates.

Lalonde used him horribly. He’d put him up with Larkin and Raymond, the line kicks back into gear, then he’d put him right back into a defensive role.

Teams and scouts see this stuff. They also know he creates space for skilled players too. Something you don’t see on scoresheets.

Thats the type of guys Buffalo should be after. Guys that are hard to play against, and do all the little things that win hockey games.

The stat chasers are gonna blow a gasket if Rasmussen is traded. They won’t be able to comprehend how he got so much in return.

I fully expect if he stays in Detroit, McLellan will put him in the Top 6 for an extended period of time, and see what type of production they get.

In Buffalo, they’d then have Thompson and Rasmussen to create space. It would make them harder to play against and that’s the goal with any trade regarding Buffalo.

They’ll need more than that, but it’d be a good start. Two or 3 guys brought in, who do all the little things and make teams pay the price, Buffa will start winning hockey games.

Rasmussen doesn’t even come close to getting you Byram. Way off base.

You could sell an Oculus Rift VR Headset to Helen Keller...

But you're not going to sell me Rasmussen for Byram

“‘Not sure why Detroit would trade him right when it looks like he is going to break out”.

Was Rasmussen breaking out of his zone during the game right then ?
Because Rasmussen’s career is completely stalled. Concrete bricks for feet, really soft for his size and his hands are questionable at best.

I’m not using ‘staple’ or ‘core piece’ to describe Ras. More like ‘fringe’ and ‘overpaid’

Rasmussen for Samuelsson maybe?

Could it be something as simple as a hockey trade?

Samuelson for Holl+

Byram makes Samuelson odd man out on the left-side (Power, Dahlin). Samuelson is a physical, talented defensive D whose only 24, has 5 more years at 4.25M and solves the 2nd pair problem for the Wings with a young, LHD to play alongside ASP, speaks Swedish, etc. Seems like an obvious hole to fill for the Wings? Is a guy that was seen as critical for the Sabres and part of their core, but looks like he's been too injury prone and has kind of become redundant with the Byram trade?

Sabres get better fits by moving off from Samuelson who they seemed ready to trade off - take something back like Holl + Veleno. Wings get a potentially better 2nd Pair LHD to try to work with ASP next year, Sabres get a RHD with less commitment (1.5yrs left at 3AAV)

Or am I severely off in valuation? (not the most familiar with BUF)

Not interested.

I honestly don't see anything enticing on Detroit that would be realistically available.

I get what your saying on the possibility of Rsssmussen emerging and it takes big guys longer.

Hes not returning a proven player in Byram

I see something like Krebs for Rasmussen.

I wouldn't trade Samuelsson for him straight up

Krebs likely wouldn’t cost any more than another dime a dozen player like Joe Veleno in a change of scenery trade, and nobody really needs to be scouted to make those trades.

I was actually told up here last night in Ottawa, where there’s all kinds of speculation going on, that Ben Chiarot is almost certain to be traded and even pretty soon. That Edmonton and Winnipeg are two front runners because he’ll waive to both, and Detroit will retain, but that “Buffalo is an option” because they’re NOT on his NTC, and they are trying to upgrade their blue line.

Those are the type of things fans don’t understand a lot too. If Buffalo wants a little more sandpaper on their blue line, there’s only so many options because they are on so many NO Trade Clauses. They then have to get more creative or settle for a player like Chiarot, if that’s what they’re wanting to do. Or, settle for another LHD when they’d rather a RHD.

As for Rasmussen… 6’6” players who can control the walls, who have hands, and do “all the little things” are valued much differently than guys like Krebs. Every scout, coach and manager thinks they’ll get more scoring out of them, and there’s actually a legit case to be made that Lalonde was not using Rasmussen correctly.

I’m not even suggesting that’s the trade or it would be Ras for Byrum straight up. Only that people will be surprised how much value Rasmussen has.

As for Byrum, let’s not forget too btw, he’s never been what he was supposed to be either. He can become a much better all around Dman, in the mold of a Shea Theodore, if he’s coached up right. If he’s not, he could end up another Tyson Barrie, who has to be sheltered and protected. Like Byrum has been in Buffalo.

There’s a reason he had to take a bridge deal, and doesn’t already have a new “wealth”contract for next season. He’s likely to be filing for arbitration, and will probably end up with another 1-2 year deal because he still hasn’t been given the opportunity to carry his own pairing and prove he’s worth a wealth contract..

Something is going on with Byrum. I think he might be trying to get himself traded and will use the contract as the excuse. Remember, we had the comments 2 wks ago about never being given the opportunity to be a #1. Lol. I think he just doesn’t want to play in Buffalo. I’d heard recently that Calgary offered Rasmus Anderson for Byrum, and that offer is on the table. Problem is, Buffalo being able to sign Andersson. Weegar has become to important to swap in a deal like that but something is going on with Byrum. Just like something is going on even worse with Jamie Drysdale in Philly.

Drysdale is another Dman who’s not looking like what he was supposed to be either. At least Byrum is decent being protected. Drysdale is just struggling. Another player Detroit is supposedly sniffing around, as well as other teams. He’s just been a horrible fit in Philly, but I’d suggest that’s a coach trying to mold the kid into a better all around Dman.

It’s funny how selective fans are sometimes though. They hold it against someone like Rasmussen for not being what he was supposed to be, but conveniently forget guys like Drysdale and Byrum aren’t either.

Remember, both were supposed to be what we see watching a Seider/Dahlin/Edvinsson or Power. Players you can’t help but see how really, really good they are/will be. Hell, DET was down 5-0 last night, and everyone watching could see how good Edvinsson is going to be, just watching some of his shifts. We’ve never seen that from Byrum, even though he was drafted 4th OVR.

It’ll be interesting if Detroit and Buffalo make a deal, and what that ends up being. Another thing I heard up here about Detroit and Buffalo is, Detroit told teams pre-trade freeze, that they wanted to wait another week or two before deciding to move some players out. After Yzerman’s comments after the coaching change yesterday, it sure sounds like winning this year, or trying to make a run for the playoffs, is now NOT in the equation. That the goals are the younger players having the right habits, getting more ice time for the future, etc.

So I fully expect Chiarot, Lyon, Husso, Kane, Copp and maybe others to be moved out over the next couple months. I do think they’ll move both Copp and Chiarot with Retention, to allow them more in return. I think they’ll keep Tarasenko though to help mentor Buchelnikov if he comes over next season.

If they make hockey trades, then we’ll see Rasmussen types being traded.

Man, you have so much text, but I have already noticed some nonsense. Especially regarding Byram and Rasmussen. I have seen a lot of criticism of Rasmussen, but at the same time you put him in some good light and clearly underestimate Byram. Byram played well this season, he played in the first pairing as a RD and was very solid in a pairing with Dahlin. There can be no deal around Byram and Rasmussen. It is just ridiculous.

There is no interest in Chiarot, Veleno, Copp, Compher, Petry or Holl.

It's going to be something underwhelming like Rasmussen for krebs+2nd or Petry for Jokiharju. Buffalo management has become experts when it comes to procrastination and overworking pointless deals.

Dime s dozen is what Rassmussen is but he costs more cap space

Buffalo has no interest in Chiarot. Right now they have 8D on 23 man roster. If they were to acquitr a D it would be a pure RD who is 26 or under.
Those are the type of things fans don’t understand a lot too. If Buffalo wants a little more sandpaper on their blue line...

They dont need more sandpaper. Samuelsson, Dahlin, and Clifton do that. If they were to acquire more they would want someone who is younger

Hr turns 26 by sessons end. Sure he could blossom but I think I have better odds at winning 3+ digit $$$ in the lottery.
I’m not even suggesting that’s the trade or it would be Ras for Byrum straight up. Only that people will be surprised how much value Rasmussen has.
I'm guessing detroit will be in terms of low value, especially now with a $3M+ contract

Basically you really havent watched him play

Byram has more team control than Andersson where he can walk in 1+ yr.
It’s funny how selective fans are sometimes though. They hold it against someone like Rasmussen for not being what he was supposed to be, but conveniently forget guys like Drysdale and Byrum aren’t either.

I'm judging him for what I see now.
Only players I see detroit trading at the deadline would be

Chiarot
Kane
Petry
Lyon or Husso( 50%) if a team wants a 3rd goalie for insurance if they have as good AHL team and they are a playoff team

Nobody us taking Copp or Compher in deadline trades. They have too much term. Sure they could be moved in offseasons or hockey roster trades of players for players

Is a guy that was seen as critical for the Sabres and part of their core, but looks like he's been too injury prone

Holl+Veleno is not getting samuelsson.... not even close.

Veleno is likely not given a QO when hes sn RFA in 26.

Dahlin plays the right side so there’s no log jam on the left side in Buffalo.
