I get what your saying on the possibility of Rsssmussen emerging and it takes big guys longer.
Hes not returning a proven player in Byram
I see something like Krebs for Rasmussen.
I wouldn't trade Samuelsson for him straight up
Krebs likely wouldn’t cost any more than another dime a dozen player like Joe Veleno in a change of scenery trade, and nobody really needs to be scouted to make those trades.
I was actually told up here last night in Ottawa, where there’s all kinds of speculation going on, that Ben Chiarot is almost certain to be traded and even pretty soon. That Edmonton and Winnipeg are two front runners because he’ll waive to both, and Detroit will retain, but that “Buffalo is an option” because they’re NOT on his NTC, and they are trying to upgrade their blue line.
Those are the type of things fans don’t understand a lot too. If Buffalo wants a little more sandpaper on their blue line, there’s only so many options because they are on so many NO Trade Clauses. They then have to get more creative or settle for a player like Chiarot, if that’s what they’re wanting to do. Or, settle for another LHD when they’d rather a RHD.
As for Rasmussen… 6’6” players who can control the walls, who have hands, and do “all the little things” are valued much differently than guys like Krebs. Every scout, coach and manager thinks they’ll get more scoring out of them, and there’s actually a legit case to be made that Lalonde was not using Rasmussen correctly.
I’m not even suggesting that’s the trade or it would be Ras for Byrum straight up. Only that people will be surprised how much value Rasmussen has.
As for Byrum, let’s not forget too btw, he’s never been what he was supposed to be either. He can become a much better all around Dman, in the mold of a Shea Theodore, if he’s coached up right. If he’s not, he could end up another Tyson Barrie, who has to be sheltered and protected. Like Byrum has been in Buffalo.
There’s a reason he had to take a bridge deal, and doesn’t already have a new “wealth”contract for next season. He’s likely to be filing for arbitration, and will probably end up with another 1-2 year deal because he still hasn’t been given the opportunity to carry his own pairing and prove he’s worth a wealth contract..
Something is going on with Byrum. I think he might be trying to get himself traded and will use the contract as the excuse. Remember, we had the comments 2 wks ago about never being given the opportunity to be a #1. Lol. I think he just doesn’t want to play in Buffalo. I’d heard recently that Calgary offered Rasmus Anderson for Byrum, and that offer is on the table. Problem is, Buffalo being able to sign Andersson. Weegar has become to important to swap in a deal like that but something is going on with Byrum. Just like something is going on even worse with Jamie Drysdale in Philly.
Drysdale is another Dman who’s not looking like what he was supposed to be either. At least Byrum is decent being protected. Drysdale is just struggling. Another player Detroit is supposedly sniffing around, as well as other teams. He’s just been a horrible fit in Philly, but I’d suggest that’s a coach trying to mold the kid into a better all around Dman.
It’s funny how selective fans are sometimes though. They hold it against someone like Rasmussen for not being what he was supposed to be, but conveniently forget guys like Drysdale and Byrum aren’t either.
Remember, both were supposed to be what we see watching a Seider/Dahlin/Edvinsson or Power. Players you can’t help but see how really, really good they are/will be. Hell, DET was down 5-0 last night, and everyone watching could see how good Edvinsson is going to be, just watching some of his shifts. We’ve never seen that from Byrum, even though he was drafted 4th OVR.
It’ll be interesting if Detroit and Buffalo make a deal, and what that ends up being. Another thing I heard up here about Detroit and Buffalo is, Detroit told teams pre-trade freeze, that they wanted to wait another week or two before deciding to move some players out. After Yzerman’s comments after the coaching change yesterday, it sure sounds like winning this year, or trying to make a run for the playoffs, is now NOT in the equation. That the goals are the younger players having the right habits, getting more ice time for the future, etc.
So I fully expect Chiarot, Lyon, Husso, Kane, Copp and maybe others to be moved out over the next couple months. I do think they’ll move both Copp and Chiarot with Retention, to allow them more in return. I think they’ll keep Tarasenko though to help mentor Buchelnikov if he comes over next season.
If they make hockey trades, then we’ll see Rasmussen types being traded.
