The reaves trade wasn't bad
He could have had a role on the team

But that trade and the reversing of it made it clear that Sullivan was actually in charge
This is pretty much it. The Reaves trade in and of itself isn't the issue. The issue is that trade illustrated the p***yfication of the team by Sullivan and how he absolutely does not understand how to utilize players to their strengths.

That trade highlighted a perfect example of a player being brought in for a purpose and Sullivan refusing to allow that player to do what he's supposed to do. It's no different than how Sullivan handles "skilled" players now. The first shit out of his mouth is about how a player PKs.

God, I've never loathed a coach as much as I do Sullivan.

Just give the babies a Malkin, Rust, and Crosby line. All the boyfriends can be together. Trade absolutely everyone else. They'll still get their points and we can still lose with all the salary dumps and newly busted prospects we can take on for picks.

I just don't understand that. This is a great achievement, why the hell wouldn't she be there? What the hell.

I'm pretty sure they've split up. I hope Geno doesn't read Facebook comments because the ones on his celebration post are filled with yinzers asking where his obviously estranged wife is. It can't feel good.

Looking back, I think the Reaves illustrated a shift in the player market and league trends and the glaring supply and demand issue. In 2016, we caught everyone off guard with our four lines of speed. Every single line could play offense and defense and skate you into the ground with aggressive forecheckers. Being backstopped by Murray helped too. But in both 2016 and 2017, the goal was be physical enough to try to stop that speed. Washington with guys like Ovie, Oshie, and Wilson, came very, VERY close both times. And when "push came to shove" we didn't have the ability to push back. Remember Wilson's knee on Sheary? Who was going to do something about that?

Well you go around the "league market" and it was more or less barren of guys who could be physical that weren't pure goons. There weren't many, if any guys like Maroon, Wilson, Lucic, etc available. I think Reaves was a guy that JR could actually get that could actually take a shift unlike a guy like Godard or god forbid Steve MacIntyre. The guys that could actually play in the top 6 that could bang were super valuable. Hell, we understood the value Hornqvist had!

2017 marked the shift towards speed AND physicality with the depth. That was the direction the league was going in and honestly, it's been going that way ever since. Washington won with it, then St Louis took note and won with it, then you had Tampa whose back end was a bunch of redwood trees. All the while, we watch guys like Maroon and Perry be valuable to their teams. Now whether or not Reaves could have been is highly debatable but at least those teams were willing to play those guys and find out. I do think a problem with Reaves as a player is, he's a "I'm gonna hit, fight, and be physical first and worry about scoring and playing second". If he had a mindset shift to "I need to focus on scoring and let the physicality part come to me", I think he could have done better.

JR was always a bit ahead of his time. Good example of when thought processes and how the game is viewed trending wise can differ and be destructive.

I was actually having that thought about JR a couple of days ago. For as many picks and prospects as he traded, the Penguins never really had an issue with having young players in the lineup. JR was really good at acquiring youth via trades (McCann, Marino, Pettersson, Kapanen and such) and UDFAs (Sheary, ZAR, O'Connor and DeSmith). He had shown a consistent ability to get those kind of guys and that has just completely stopped since he left.

Them not having any prospects or young guys coming up through the minors is definitely JR's fault, but I do wonder if JR would have been able to continue adding youth like he had been doing for his entire time with the Penguins. Not that things would be perfect, but I think this team would be in a much better spot with JR as the GM and continuing to add these McCann/Marino/Pettersson types via trade.
Then trading them after Sullivan used them like shit or didn't like them?

What young players did JR ever trade after Sullivan didn't like them?

It's Sprong and....uh, who else, exactly?
JR was too busy trading 1st rounders and solid players to get Big Game Ass for Sullivan after he talked him up out of nowhere. Then when Big Game Ass failed, trading him to get two more players Sullivan wouldn't understand how to use.

Sullivan's usage of several players caused a lot of trades.

I don't get what the f*** you're on right now? You either agree Sullivan is the issue or you find ways to defend him and then go back to admitting Sullivan sucks.

Are you just filling the inner Pixies void in yourself to play this idiotic Devils advocate shit? JR was a dipshit so are the next two Gms, all three allowed Sullivan to dictate moves and tank the f***ing team. I don't give two f***s about specific names anymore.

My patience is super f***ing thin with dealing with gurgles type of f***ing fence sitting shit.

I made a post about JR's trade history and how he was able to consistently bring in young NHL talent to the team. You then responded with some nonsense about Sullivan, so I asked "what young guys did JR trade because of Sullivan"? Now you're going on some sort of rant about how I'm defending Sullivan, even though my post was taking about JR and you're the one bringing up Sullivan.

Ryan Malone gets my vote. Ryan's brain is like he's playing with a plastic souvenir stick on the ice.

Everyone who has been mentioned is a good option, but nobody's stated the obvious yet:

It can be, should be, and must be.... Phil Bourque.

He's the New Edzo: dumb as a box of rocks as he leads us to the Promised Land of 32nd place but, even more important, when he's behind the bench he's nowhere near a microphone.

This was probably one of the better games they have played this season, arguably their best even. And they still lost to the most mediocre of teams. That says something. It may say a lot, in fact.

Both top lines looked decent. Not amazing, but decent. Even my whipping boy Beauvillier played a solid game. He should never kill penalties again, mind you. But solid. The defense was not a total clusterf**k, and Nedeljkovic played well. And they still lost.

Maybe we should get used to it. But I still believe that a coaching change could salvage not only this season, but the entire rebuild. Too bad it is not even on the table.

I feel for Lizotte, but how unlucky can you be to constantly get your face between where the puck is and where it is going?

Dubas should step back and hire Bourque as the GM.

Yikes -- now that's taking the joke a bit too far. When a coach is fired his influence ceases; a GM can damage a team for years to come. Do we really want pseudo-tough guy GM Phil Bourque trading all our draft picks to acquire "truculence"?
