When Yzerman arrived back in Detroit, the Red Wings had Dylan Larkin and pretty much nothing else. He was able to trade Anthony Mantha and Tyler Bertuzzi who are nice players but nothing special.

They now have one of the top prospect pools in the NHL, a #1 dman in Seider, a 1st line forward in Ray, and will be adding pieces every single season going forward. Edvinssson, Cossa, Sandin-Pelikka, Danielson, Kasper, Brandsegg-Nygaard could all be in the lineup as soon as 2025-26.

Yzerman is giving short term deals to legit NHL'ers to bide time until the prospects are ready.
I've been hearing this for like 3 years. And they've handed out a lot of long-term contracts to mid guys.
Holland left behind a lot of bad contracts and virtually no prospects. The Canucks hit with their higher picks like Horvat, McCann, Boeser, Petersson while Holland was busy drafting Zadina (picked one ahead of you know who), Rasmussen, Veleno, Cholowski.

Then when Detroit bottomed out for real, they got screwed in the lottery and dropped back to 4th in what wasn't a super strong year anyway. It was a deep, deep hole. Luckily they came away with Raymond and Seider.

It's not fun having the team be this bad for this long, but I'm glad Yzerman is avoiding the shiny new toy deals that turn out to be a nightmare, and I'm not sure what he could've done to make the team better faster. I'd rather they be competitive for several years then go nuts for a season and regress.
Huh? In free agency Yzerman went out and tossed a lot of money on guys like Copp, Compher, Holl, Chiarot, Maatta, etc.
So they paid a pick to get rid of Walman then turn around and give the money to Tarasenko? Yzerman has no idea what he's doing.
#trust the Yzerplan

Yzerman can't win around here. Makes a zero risk move.

The plan is not bad, but its really taking too long, all the moves hes making are buying time moves as Larkin ages. His resume and what he did in Tampa is not matching to what is unfolding in his current tenure, that's the reason for more and more detractors as the team keep missing playoffs. he is looking like a good GM that makes low risk moves. Not Yzerman with the genius Yzerplan like what he was hyped up to be 5 years ago when he started his tenure.

As I said, Danielsson Kasper MBN Cossa and even ASP dont really scream top line players to most. all good chance to be contributors. Edvinsson has a good shot, but considering where hes drafted, its expected for him to be a good player. Without any home run picks, nor diamond in the rough picks in the later rounds, how likely is a team to win a cup? thats my opinion anyways. Going from Benning to Allvin, or what Nill and Zito did respectively sicne, its astoundingly evident what a star GM can do to change the fortune of a team in a very short time.

Congrats to Tarasenko, helped my team win a Cup and got paid, happy for the man.

Obviously no way the Panthers could have offered him anything close to that, what with the team having approximately $13.50 in remaining cap space.

Sure but look at what he started with in Tampa compared to the Wings. And I think the Yzerman Tampa hype is why there's people who jump into threads like to give hot takes. (not referring to you. I don't agree with everything you said but you're making solid points and not just flaming).

And I agree without a home run pick how do they win the Cup? I honestly don't know. But when they bottomed out they weren't handed a generational talent. People talk about how long the rebuild is taking now, if Yzerman stripped the team for spare parts to continue tanking it would've likely doubled the length of it with no guarantee of top end talent.

He got a few goals in finals but I thought he was one of the worst skaters on ice for Panthers thru much of playoffs

Dont think he has much left in tank and will continue to slowdown/fade
Im not really a Tarasenko fan as my past posts will show -- however, he looked a lot better on the Panthers than he did when he went to Rangers. Not that he's trending up, but I think he has a step on Perron speed wise and will be a perfect replacement for him on our PP. Term and cap are both reasonable.

5 years into a rebuild where you're starting from 100% scorched earth is 10 years minimum.

We're halfway through it, these things take time. In the meantime have assembled the top prospect pool in the NHL despite the worst lottery luck in the NHL. We have plenty of cap space to resign our 2 most important pieces soon.

Too many people have unrealistic timelines when it comes to how long a true rebuild takes.

Maybe. Missed by a point last year, I'll take those odds.
What odds? No one mentioned any. I'm seeing Detroit at +130, meaning oddsmakers are giving them less than 50% chance of making it.

It is certainly possible. They're not favoured to do it though.

He's handed out exactly one long-term contract: Dylan Larkin for 8 years. He would like to add Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider to long-term deals. None of those guys are mid.

If you are referring to Copp and Compher getting 5 year deals, those were done because Detroit had zero center depth (Larkin and absolutely nothing), he didn't want to rush Kasper or Danielson to the NHL, and both guys could be moved to the wing or be traded. Also I wouldn't say two guys in a position of need on a 23 man roster is "a lot".

People asking what is Detroit doing.

I say trying to make playoffs.

You said maybe this year they sneak in.

I said maybe, they only missed by 1 point last year I like their odds.

What am I missing? Why does this confuse you?

You said you like their odds? What are their odds? How likely are they to make it? I replied with an objective estimate (from sportsbooks).

Yes. How likely they are to make it...

I like their odds of making it.
I like their chances of making it.

Chances? What chances?
