It’s one of the better signings of the day. They were getting someone with some ability to put up some points and the difference between signing him and Gostisbehere is double, money wise but not on the ice.

Wings fans, think of this as re-signing Gostisbehere at half the price. It doesn't fix their backend problems, but you can't really expect 2 million to solve that anyway. They have a guy to run PP1 if Seider doesn't grab it back (or heaven forbid goes down with injury). He was a beast while Fox was out

They were adding someone with some offense. This way, it leaves them open to make other additions via trade, that won’t have them stuck with another anchor of a contract. Worse case imaginable, they’re eating about $800k sending him down to Grand Rapids, if it ever comes to it.

If Veleno files for arbitration, which we assume he likely will because of comparable contracts, they will have access to that second buyout window. Petry will qualify due to his total contract, although Detroit is only on the hook for $2.3m, but if Husso is still on the roster at that point and won’t be viewed as LTIR for this upcoming season, good bet Husso is bought out in August.

You almost have to think they know Veleno will file, and he should obviously. Several players of his stature making over $2 million.
