How much longer does Despres have waiver exemption?
Despres would have to clear waivers next year. He either makes the team or gets traded sometime before then. He can't stay in the minors, and he obviously would not clear waivers. Has much higher trade value than a guy like Strait, so there's a market for him, obviously.
This is my projection for next year:

So yeah, I don't see Despres fitting in anywhere.
Orpik: 5x5
Nisky: 3.5x3
Glass: 1.5x2
Engo: 1.5x3
No offense, but no F*ing chance that's the line-up. The Pens are NOT going to pay Orpik anywhere close to $5million/year (if they event want to retain him at all, which I have my doubts about), and even if they did, they would NEVER go for a 5 year term on a player of his age.
Niskanen is going to make more than $3.5. See Matt Carle, who isn't even as good as Niskanen and was signed when there was a lower cap. He will get closer to $4-$4.5 million/year. Thus, if the Pens were to retain someone, it would be Orpik OR Niskanen, not both. To me, it's not even close.
AND, you're forgetting about Paul Matrin. If we were to re-sign Orpik to that F*ing ridiculous deal, we would never be able to sign the much superior Paul Martin. So forget it.
And finally: Engelland is a guy who I think is going to walk, because on another team, he will get $2+ million/year. There are a lot of teams that could use a big, tough right handed defenseman. In particular, I see teams like Calgary and Edmonton (as just a couple of examples) of teams that would overpay to get a guy with size, toughness and veteran experience to help with their rebuild and bring young kids along. Engo will be priced out of our range in a similar way that Talbot was, but to a greater degree. I would like to retain him as a 12th forward who could also play D, but I see him as a guy who would rather take more $ to be a top-4 Dman somewhere.
