Is 11 5m for the Most Overrated Goalie in the History of Hockey the Worst Contract in History

The Rangers have been carried by goaltending for the better part of this century - year after year, mediocre teams pulled further than their ability by a goaltender standing on his head.

The minute one comes back down to earth, their fanbase loses their minds.
the minute one come back down to earth after signing a deal like that ......their fansbase loses their minds.
Looks good on the cocky Shesterkin.
Swayman too.
Bruins ans Rags have always had great goakrending. Now both gave over rated, over paid long term numms in between the pipes. Ki$$ the play offs good bye.

He came down to earth fast after last year. That contract and a few others on the Rags are not looking good. Something is off with this organization, or is it sign a deal, lay back and enjoy the location.

Yet another game today where the Rangers are getting violently outshot and outplayed yet manage to stay in the game due to Shesterkin standing on his head. Same thing happened against Calgary this week.

I’m ready for the “they’re not trying anymore” excuses

He was their best player in the playoffs, though. If the team was at least half good as him that postseason, they could have won it all.

And he's dragging them to the playoffs this season again... or he's trying at least.

While there are some fans who embarked on a crusade against Shesterkin since he signed that major contract making him the highest paid goalie in the league, it’s still evident he’s posting very solid numbers and he’s the main reason the Rangers are still in the play off hunt.

Let’s look at Goals Saved Above Expected.

As you can see, he’s ranked 4th and he’s the only goalie of a non play off team in this list.

He’s currently rocking the 2.84 .906 (18th) stat line along with 5 SO which is tied for third best in the NHL.

In comparison, two other elite goalies that recently signed major contracts and playing on similarly struggling teams, Saros and Swayman, have much worse stats this year:

Swayman 0.892 3.12

Saros: 0.894 2.99

Well yeah, he’s the Rangers best player by far and gives them really good chances to win games they have no business winning.

That said, it still doesn’t justify handing him that contact. The team around him is so g-d damn awful that they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

I’d love to be proven wrong on that but it’s hard to envision right now.

Well, it was mostly the same team that won Eastern Conference and made ECF last year, not sure what exactly happened to them

Other than Dahlin, he's the other player I'd really like to see on a different team because I think he's still arguably the best goalie but the Rangers are a mess now.

Someone would've given him that contract - the guy is at worst the 2nd best goalie when the games really matter (IMO he is the best goalie in the playoffs) with a .928 save percentage in the playoffs throughout his career. He's one of the few goalies that is actually worth paying that type of money for.

Maybe. But i definitely don’t know if it should have been the Rangers, based on their current trajectory

Really? What I've seen of him he's been fine, not looking like #1 in the world, but solid, mind you that's been maybe 5 games.
Don't get me wrong the Rangers aren't elite defensively so that doesn't hep him. Every game I seem to watch though he's the second best goalie on the ice most of the time.

Besides that one Vezina year he has't been all world, definitely wouldn't have paid him 11.5 million, he's not Hellebuyck or Vasilevskiy
