Dermott injury update

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
I didn't read about anyone saying replace Rielly but I did read and hear about trading Dermott. I always disagreed and had low expectations for Lehtonen. We've seen it time and time again where a hyped up player comes from Europe and comes up flat. I still say Dermott fits in better in the top 6 than Lehtonen or sandin right now

Lehtonen has played 4 games with literally zero prior North American experience and practically no training camp. Not only is he figuring out new teammates, he is figuring out a whole lot of other stuff right now.

The same thing applies to Barabanov, although defense is harder than being a 4th line wing... And there is a lot more competition and depth at 4th line winger than on defense. They will almost certainly get better with time.

Just saying, a lot of people jump the gun on these guys, it's like a shiny new toy. I had low expectations with both those guys coming in and I still wouldn't pencil him in dermotts spot unless he earns it

I just think someone like Sandin has proven previously against better opponents like Boston, Tampa Bay and others to hold his own. Why wouldnt we put him games like we have been having against our division.

If there was a time to play a Sandin or Lethonen now would be the time.

Man. Does Jimmy Vesey had nudes of Keefe, Shanny, and Dubie?

This guy doesn't belong in the lineup. I would rather try to get Barabanov or Anderson going. Or when Robertson gets back get him in.

Vesey doesn't provide anything, or am I missing something?

If the Leafs are going to give Sandin a shot, I'd be inclined to do it against Vancouver. Other than Ottawa, Van offers the least competition in the division.

Veseys 5v5 stats and ranking on the year:

(out of the 11 players with more than 50+ min so far)

CF%: 55.93 (+3.57 REL) - 4th best out of 11
xGF%: 51.08 (+0.16 REL) - 6th best out of 11

Goals/60: 0.95 - 6th best out of 11
Points/60: 1.43 - 6th best out of 11

Stats overall are decent but might be inflated as a passenger on a good line for a while

I'm not sure on how the Cap would work etc. right now... but if we smoke them again next game, give Bogo a rest, play Sandin on the left, Lehtonen on the right... Give these guys some ice time, and see what we've got. Maybe even dress seven D, just in case.

Yea I wouldnt mind seeing him getting a rep but its tough.

The Sandin "outrage" has ben a little strange to me. With Dermott/Bogo playing so well and having to give the big get in Lehtonen a solid chance, Sandin is sort of the odd man out. Winning games is still important so how do you tell yourself to stop doing what is working? In the meantime, not sure its hurting Sandin that much to keep working out and practicing with the team. He'll be able to jump in whenever they need him with 100% clarity on the team strats and should be in excellent shape in case of fatigue/injury.

but very weak 5 on 5 play so far ... he can't be trusted on ice 5 on 5 .. folk da end is near for Lehtonen ... look for a trade here

I don't know what everyone expected from the guy. He's an offensive dman from the KHL. Did everyone think his game would translate on the NHL?

Yup Lehtonen just can't process the game at NHL speed and looks overwhelmed trying to maintain positioning.

Hopefully Dermott is back but if not I'm really hoping we see Sandin given a chance.

I had ZERO idea ... but I get it now ... if we had lots of CAP room be nice to hold him as a PP backup if Rielly got hurt

Isn't 4 games a little early for the eulogy

I don't have any strong opinions about Lehtonen whether he will or won't succeed, but Justin Holl makes me think it's worth finding out what you have

Yes all true but this is an 8 year pro who is 27 .. but I get ur line of thinking i do ... there are Holl's out there who get it very late ... at same time every team has to be grooming da next guys too ... this is how it works ... each year a young guy starts his program ... to me we got 2 guys Dermy and Sandin who need time to develop ... we can't completely go 100% vet guys ... i mean what a total opposite strategy like a 180 turn

No outrage in this corner. As you say, it's a tough time for Sandin to break in. Not knowing (haven't checked updates) how badly Dermott is injured, and accepting that Lehtonen needs a fair shot at proving his abilities, RS has been forced to sit. Getting stronger is certainly beneficial, as is practicing with the team, but playing games is helpful too. Also, being able to slot Rasmus into the line-up with a competent partner (Bogo, a pleasant surprise himself) is now possible, and a would ease Sandin's transition. It mirrors my views of Liljegren. I think his opportunity to break in would be wonderfully assisted by playing with Muzzin. But, with Holl being such a revelation, what to do? These are certainly problems I'm not used to seeing with the Leafs. What to do?

Stupidly, I always forget about this pesky Cap situation. I don't know either.

Lehtonen has looked fine given his lack of play time and regular shifts to get into a grove. Apparently he is very hard working and very hard on himself. Needs to find some confidence. I think he will be fine given an opportunity

Mikko coming off his best practice with the Leafs and now his best game with the Leafs, wonder if Keefe will keep him Monday night.

Bogosian has been great. He's actually a lot better puck mover and skater than I even thought. And he's a hard nosed player who does a lot of talking. Don't underestimate his importance or how much help he's been to guys like Lehtonen. Keefe said the bench communication is up this year, and a lot of it has to do with guys like Bogo. You don't take someone out when it's working. And he's looked great in a third pairing role and on the PK in my ability. Some fans still haven't learned having guys like Barrie and pairings like Sandin-Dermott has been what's wrong with this defence over the years. As it's been this year, in the final minutes of a tight game, and rather have Muzzin, Brodie, Holl, or Bogosian on the ice than even a guy like Rielly. It's not a skill thing, it's a role thing. And right now we have great balance. Dermott-Bogosian, Lehtonen-Bogosian...look a lot better to me than Lehtonen-Dermott imo. We're solid in our own zone for once, why mess that up? Management knows this, and it's likely why you see one of Dermott or Lehtonen become expendable, especially when you factor in Sandin sitting there waiting.

Agreed, he's a stabilizing presence. We've needed a glass & out, tough customer on the bottom pair for years. Look at Hughes without Tanev this year. Every team needs a guy who will do the Charlie work.

Agreed. Big mistake to take Bogosian out, especially now with the unfortunate Simmonds news coming out with him missing 6 weeks. We need Bogos physical presence back there even more now. He’s been a fantastic 3rd pairing dman, helps to shelter him knowing his past injury history as well.

sure but he has had massive injuries. Letting. Him sit in a compressed schedule isn’t a bad thing.
