I don't think it's clear, it will be clear after next year when Dermott slots into the second D pairing after Gardiner's departure. Dermott is 22 in only his first full season. At the end of the day the Canes only lose out because they don't need D.

It's crystal clear. Pretending otherwise is the height of delusion.

Doesn't really help the Canes much.

Infact, they get worse and save money that they don't need to save.

Not about saving money at all, it's about getting a LHD. Carolina has a huge surplus of RHD.

I get this type of deal goes against the grain from a Carolina perspective because you're dead set on a forward.

2 levels of crazy here:

A) Leafs fans...Dermott is not as good as Pesce right now. This does make the Canes worse because it crowds their left side towards the bottom pairing and makes them weaker overall because they lose top end RD strength. They would not do this all things being equal even.
B) Leafs haters...I get you hate the Leafs and no Leafs players will ever be good...I'll end it here

Verdict;

Poor proposal, but I understand the effort from Toronto's perspective because Dermott's subjective trajectory is similar to Pesce, he could be better, or worse...But why would Carolina ever do this???

Dermott is the immediate future of the Leafs defense so no. I like Pesce and would like him on the team but not for Dermott. I also like Dermott's style of play in pushing offense over Pesce's more conservative style.

Almost have identical stat lines - value is there. Sure I get the Hurricanes want a forward.. Value for Value? It's pretty close

Soo... we're evaluating these guys' value based on points? This thread makes a lot more sense now.

Ahh yes, going with the "thinking outside of the box" angle.
