you guys are all bums for counting him out and saying he sucked and not a good player.. this team will struggle with him.. and now your all loving him.. its amazing i love reading these boards!!! hahahhahahaha Kids a beast, great 2way game and one of the best team players in the game!! He's only 22 and I am sure he could be a possible selke finalist if not win it down the road..

I remember people saying that he doesn't improve. Well he's still a mediocre skater and his **** is still not great. However, he's now a solid faceoff guy and a good defensive player.

I think his skating is underrated...doesn't look good but if you watch him he always ends up getting to the puck, applying pressure and creating turnovers its crazy!

He does create a lot of turnovers. Very underrated part of his game, I think. Wish he would do something after the turnover though. :(

So many casual hockey obsever's on here that really don't get it! Derek Stepan has been and will continue to be pound for pound the best Center Iceman this team has.. Nuff said!

I don't know if the pound for pound part is that relevant when it comes to playing the game... (ig, compare like Strålman to Chara, does it matter that Strålman is better than Chara pound for pound?) ;)

Its great to see that Stepan is picking it up playing next to Rick Nash. We really need it and Stepan really needed to take another step in his development, because a kid can look promising for a long time and get by on that, but if he kept playing like he did in the PO's last season things can go down hill really really fast.

Playing next to Rick Nash has really helped him because he has been able to concentrate on what he does best. There is still a few aspects of his game that he really needs to improve in, because nowadays I don't think its a good idea to build a career on playing next to someone else, but it certainly will not hurt him that he gets some peace and positive feed back while he gets to work on his intensity etc.

the kids been playing like this the entire year and since he's been here..everyone here looks at stats at the end of the day but i mean he skates hard and has a great two way game..the difference is people are starting to step their own game up and score/contribute and he was snakebitten early on and couldn't score.. I think sometimes you guys have blinders on and don't see how players play and just see everything as stats..

He DID suck! If Richards starts playing elite again tomorrow we'll all be crapping kittens but that won't change the fact he was a sh** show to start the season! The major diff of course is Stepan is young so most people were saying even though he was invisible to start the season he could very well still improve as what happens with young ins.

You're misinterpreting the situation with your blanket accusations people many were complaining he wasn't meeting his current level of play when we all knew he should be capable. You're right though how dare we ask players to perform up to realistic expectation when they underperform for an extended period of time!?

Define extended, we're not even halfway through the season?!?! Were people not trying to determine his trade value at one point in time? People around here need to stop *****ing.

If richards plays sick for the rest of the year Id still say buy him out at the 13-14'.. its a pure business decision nothing more and nothing less.. He's paid half the money in 3yrs of play and you know he'll be on a downward spiral since he signed it.. I DO THINK tho if you are or do sign an elite contract like richards (nash/callahan/gabs) did he (they) should be criticized to the fullest if expectations arent met.. thats why hes a number 1 center and stepans a two.. hes suppose to carry the weight.. but not everything is stats and I think all you guys rush to all sorts of opinions on players just bc they aren't producing.. to me its a team game and as long as everyone is clicking on all cylinders and doing the little things right thats all you could ask for.. whether you win 1-0 or 10-0 a win is a win..

Just stop right there!!! Your post makes too much sense. Posts like that aren't appreciated around here.

He sucked for the first 5 games, maybe, after that it as people's previously conceived views that kept feeding the perception. And regardless, his early level of play doesn't mean people demanding his trade weren't being over-dramatic and short sighted.

I think we're getting robbed from the rec center dude..All he wanted was a 6th or 7th rounder for Step...Just get him off the team rec center dude screams...He can't skate and can't shoot...Love the scouts on this board.

Stepan playing some of the best hockey of his NHL career the last 2-3 games. Showing more speed and more assertiveness moving the puck and trying to create in the offensive zone for others. It's what I've been waiting for, personally. This is the hockey he played at Wisconsin and in the WJC.

Another solid performance from Step tonight, 2 more assists. I feel as if offense from him is the icing on the cake of Nash, Cally, and Gab. Anything we get from him is extra, so if he keeps producing, we'll score A LOT of goals.

Stepan has played much better as of late. He looked good with Callahan and now Nash. I was upset with his play early this year, but the last few games have been very good. I'm glad he is playing better because we need him now more than ever. I would still like him to go back to playing with Callahan when Richards gets healthy because I think Richards needs Nash right now to keep him from being totally lost out there.

However, Stepan has to keep it up. He has made a habit of being very good in the earlier parts of a season and then completely falling off the map as it progresses. Lets hope that is no more.

There is no way Torts is breaking up Nash and Stepan! Step as been great for the 12-15 games.

...as in very.

I'm watching him chase down pucks all the time and then I think about the geniuses that keep saying this guy can't skate. You could put lots of good skaters on a line with Nash and Hagelin and they would look poor in comparison.
