hence why I mentioned one and not the other two.

Holloway bolted to Europe as a RFA, Vey was traded at the draft while still under contract.

Thanks. You'd think Holloway could have got himself traded to another nhl/ahl team with a higher likelihood of getting NHL minutes, unless he was intent on sightseeing.

The Kings want to develop players in the american league for a long as possible. They've stated this. I think Lombardi has even stated it's one of the aspects he feels the organization still needs work on. He feels that they've brought prospects up too soon. Lombardi has stated he want's to develop like the Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings are infamous are for letting players develop in the A for forever. The Kings want to be like that too. We may even see more of it when the teams move to Ontario, and the Kings won't have to carry 23 men every time.

This is all good a thing. Good for the Kings, good for the players. It's why guys like Gravel are passing up signing with other NHL teams just to be developed by the LA Kings. And Lombardi has been doing guys right. If you pay your dues and perform, but there is no spot for you. Then he'll trade you somewhere were you can get that chance. Which is exactly happen to Vey and Kozun. That goes a long way with players. Players notice that.

I agree with guys that there is no harm in bringing Forbort up for a look. If the situation was different, you may see it. If Voynov wasn't suspended and maybe it was just McNabb who was injured. The I think the Kings would consider bringing Forbort in. But in the current situation, it isn't the right time. We wouldn't even be seeing Shore right now, if wasn't for two major players going down long term and that same time.

Again, I think it's all a good thing. If you develop great players, if you WIN, and if you treat players right. Then they're going to want to stay with team. They're not gonna want to go anywhere.

The really odd part is reportedly DL had Holloway pencilled into a roster spot with the Kings for the upcoming season but Holloway wanted a one-way deal and DL insisted on a two-way deal. Holloway elected to go to Europe rather than take a one year two-way deal and get a real good shot at joining the Kings. Instead LA dressed Ethan Moreau and Trent Hunter. You'd have to think Holloway had at least a decent shot of beating one of them, if not out of camp then during the season. Instead Dwight King and Jordan Nolan got the chance to replace those guys and took full advantage of it to get a cup ring.

When the kings drafted Forbort they thought he could be another Larry Robinson. That's not going to happen, I'd settle for Willie Mitchell now.

Is there anybody in the NHL that you would compare yourself to that we can say didn't see you play, but he plays like?

I don't know, someone I try to model my game after is Chris Pronger. Good puck man, defenseman. Just an all around defenseman.

It was all about money for Holloway. He could've spent another year making AHL or close to NHL minimum money in the NHL or chase a big contract in Europe. He chose the money in Europe. The hang up with his new contract was he wouldn't budge on his refusal to sign a two-way contract. He wanted NHL money even if he was in the AHL.

Excellent article. Forbort, as well as Gravel, Dowd and Mersch, deserves a chance to prove himself in the NHL. This upcoming season is the moment when the drafting and development of young, promising, inexpensive players is meant to pay off. This is the "plan" Lombardi has been preaching since day one. This keeps the window open. This mitigates the inevitable cap issues good teams have. This is very exciting.

Forbort will be very successful if he can get enough playing time. He isn't going to get better sitting in the press box. Not playing him last year was a serious mistake.

As a former 1st round pick on an ELC the Kings would have loved nothing more than to see Forbort take the bull by the horns and become a fulltime NHL defender. They traded up to get him and have been developing him for years, they obviously have a lot invested in him.

But the fact is, he was not good last year, he looked slow and timid in the defensive zone, struggled with one on one situations and positioning and provided little to no offense at all.

And yes I know, it was his first few games in the NHL, but this is a kid who played over 160 AHL games before his first NHL game and before that spent three years playing in the NCAA. This was not 18 year old Aki Berg being throw to the wolves.

Probably also lost his chance to get his name on the Cup. You know he'd have been called up around the same time King and Nolan were, if not before.

Forbort would be a huge miss if he doesn't find a spot on the team and is either traded or waived in the future. It would like Hickey, part 2, only worse.

With Doughty, Muzzin, Martinez, McNabb, Scuderi and Greene under contract it looks like a pretty simple equation to me-Forbort has to play better than Scuderi. Forbort also has to outplay Scuderi in a 5/6th defensemen role, with limited minutes, defenisive zone starts and ZERO PP time. Under that scenario he would have to have an outstanding camp or he seems better served with big minutes in Ontario.

but would he clear waivers? I think scuderi and greene both would.

I do not believe Forbort will clear waivers. He now has a decent contract that could attract a different team. $650. He's young 24 and now developed as much as he's going to be in the AHL. We just have to start the season with him. We don't have any choice. We have to give him minutes to see if we want to keep him for the future. Greene, Scuderi, and Gilbert don't answer any questions for the future.

No way he clears waivers with a fresh, two year deal at a real low cap hit.

Hickey had never played in an NHL game and was claimed. Sure, he was 4th overall v. 15th overall but nobody had him as high as 4 except, supposedly, one other team (Boston?).

Look at some of the #6 or #7 guys around the NHL and then think about whether a former 1st round pick with a low cap hit that has been developing in what is considered to be a good program will get taken for free.

Honestly, they really need to have him step up and not be another Hickey situation. What a 1st round clown store operation DL and staff will be if they lose this guy for nothing and he goes on to be an adequate NHL player.

I think he makes the team out of camp and it isn't even a discussion. They will not lose him to waivers. He is more important than Trotman so BFD about him. Gilbert/Greene/Scuderi could all get waived and probably not get claimed.

8-3
6-27
Gravel-Vet
Forbort

Kings could carry an extra d-man at the expense of a forward as well. Regardless, lot of bodies for not a lot of spots right now. Moves will be made. I also can't imagine Greene ever touching the ice in Ontario. Have the man retire and then give him a job in the organization: he deserves it. Just make sure the salary the first two years of this new position is $2MM a year and he'll be in for sure.
