Demidov: "I Love Malkin Much Better Than Ovie"

This everyday of the week an twice on sunday.

Ovie is the best goalscorer in league history but Malkin was clearly the better overall player in his prime. Hockey is so much more than a lethal slapshot from the left circle.
Hit puck real hard, puck go in net isn't the worst strategy. Many of the best fighters throw punches down the middle.

It’s a pretty innocent quote, one that I’m sure Ovi himself doesn’t mind at all.

He just said that he liked Malkin more, not that he was better.
Exactly. He’s clearly not bashing Ovi. Anyone claiming otherwise is just stirring up drama. And the idea that Ovi needs a rookie’s comments for motivation is laughable, his only drive is winning the Cup.

Hockey fans: "interviews are so boring, players never say anything of note"

Also hockey fans:

Malkin was always less influential and less respected worldwide player. Demidov should have been quiet as well as Laine

Add yourself to that list of people who should be quiet. Unless you're the gatekeeper of peoples' favorite players and the rest of us are simply unaware of your limitless power

Laine was shit-talking an organization that bent over backwards to praise him publicly, especially during his mental health absence, and accommodated his trade request. Demidov said... he liked Malkin more than Ovechkin.

He's going to need some media training.

He'll learn not to actually give out his opinion.

It's kind of sad really but necessary nowadays.
Yup, never want to give the other team/players anything that could be considered bulletin board material.

If I had had to start a team in 2006, I probably would have taken Malkin over Ovie too.
Bad take...

At worst, Malkin and Ovechkin had pretty similar single season peaks. 2008 Ovi demolished the league in goals, was one of the best hitters and possession players in the league, and won the Ross.

For overall peak, he had 3 straight seasons as the bonafide best player in the league. One of the bigger ranking polls in 2019 had ranked the best seasons post-lockout:

1) Ovi 2008
2) Malkin 2012
3) Kucherov 2019
4) Ovi 2010
5) Ovi 2009

25 Best Forward Seasons Since 2005 - #5

Single season peak: Slight edge to Ovi at best, tie at worst.

Any kind of extended peak: Huge advantage Ovi - and it's not really close at all. Malkin has never finished top-10 in the Hart 3 seasons in a row. And the only time he has done it 2 seasons in a row, he finished second behind Ovechkin both times.

Career: Not even remotely close. Ovechkin by a large margin.

I love when the Russians start talking shit lol

Someone once told me that criminals will leave me alone because I look Russian. I embraced that mindset and here I am.
What Im trying to say is that perception might not always be the actual reality. You really shouldnt read too much into what these guys are saying in their interviews. They are basically forced to wing it each time. They are also hockey players. Hockey players are not always very wise and/or eloquate with the things they say.

I know most people see this correctly but the fact that there are actually multiple people who have a problem with this and are using it against Demidov makes me lose faith in humanity

When the Caps won the Cup they won it because a few other bets worked out (like Kuznetsov having the form of his life). Ovechkin wasn't the driver those playoffs. Malkin was a much bigger piece on those big Penguins teams. And I don't like the Penguins. On a personality level I probably like Ovie better, but he's basically a set piece sniper of marginal other value.

That’s a misrepresentation of the truth. Ovi led the playoffs in goals, provided the physicality and the two way play required out of him. Kuzy had 5 more points and provided the big OT winner in round 2.

Ovi was the #1 choice for the Conn Smythe even if Kuzy was a close 2nd.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Just because Ovi is Russian and broke Gretzky’s record, doesn’t mean that every young Russian player should automatically love him more than anyone else. If someone loves Malkin’s game more, that’s perfectly fine. Not even sure why make an article on that or make a thread about it

We sure he just isn't glorifying the guy they are going up against in R1 who also has a bit of history against Montreal? Could have easily been a political response. Either way, Malkin is probably the 2nd name you'd expect anyways.
