It’s a pretty innocent quote, one that I’m sure Ovi himself doesn’t mind at all.

He just said that he liked Malkin more, not that he was better.

I'm glad he replied this way. I hate leading questions like that. They should have asked something like, "who was your biggest idol growing up?"

See, if he had, to that question, answered that he liked Malkin, then you would have absolutely no issues with that. It would be a completely normal, no-news answer. But due to the leading question, now you think that his answer's strange.

It pretty much was framed in a way that only has one right answer: "Yes I looked up to Ovechkin, he's always been an inspiration," or whatever. It's effectively psychological manipulation, and I'm glad he overcame it and actually said what he really thinks, even if you don't like it.

It's not a big deal. It's just that hockey players have a stereotype for giving insipid and cookie-cutter type responses to questions like that.

If Connor Bedard was asked about Sid Crosby, I can't imagine he would reply, "Yeah, he's okay, but I've always been a big McDavid guy."

I'm not necessarily saying it's good or bad, just different. At least he's honest.

It wasn’t a tongue-in-cheek answer.
A reporter asked if Ovechkin was his role model growing up, and Demidov, with his broken English, said that he was during his childhood, but later his model became Malkin (“love Malkin more than Ovy”).

It’s a throwaway quote from someone who barely speaks English, and people are using it to stir up drama.
