I'm glad he replied this way. I hate leading questions like that. They should have asked something like, "who was your biggest idol growing up?"
See, if he had, to that question, answered that he liked Malkin, then you would have absolutely no issues with that. It would be a completely normal, no-news answer. But due to the leading question, now you think that his answer's strange.
It pretty much was framed in a way that only has one right answer: "Yes I looked up to Ovechkin, he's always been an inspiration," or whatever. It's effectively psychological manipulation, and I'm glad he overcame it and actually said what he really thinks, even if you don't like it.
