Well that quote backfired very quickly.

Keep your mouth shut about the GOAT, especially if you’re gonna go completely ghost mode in the first game
Does it really make a difference?

Its like if someone asked me my favorite player growing up and I said Koivu instead of Lemieux and Lemieux scored a few goals.

Does it change who my favorite player growing up was? Its not even an insult lol

He's going to need some media training.

He'll learn not to actually give out his opinion.

It's kind of sad really but necessary nowadays.

Big fning deal. Talk about making something out of nothing. Geez.
I agree with this. People are allowed to be individuals and honestly, if anyone ever paid attention to the way Malkin plays/played when healthy, they wouldn't be trying to shame the kid for this opinion. I'm obviously on the Ovi 'wagon, but Malkin plays/played a beautiful brand of hockey.

It’s okay, Ovie will show him a thing or two today

Were those things goals? Because he showed him 2 goals.

Just kinda a funny answer, and one that absolutely fills the stereotype of Russians saying whatever they want. “Yes, I know I should say he inspired me and blah blah- I liked Malkin more. Why do you care?”.

Ovechkin was so mad about this. You could see it. He even referenced it in his between period interview if you read between the lines.

He was all, “Strome give me a good pass, I just try to make something happen.”

And then he said, “Yeah we’re all trying to be physical and just set the tone.”

It was on his mind all night.

2009 Malkin destroys any season from Ovechkin. Dude was on another planet.
Round 2 of Ovechkin and Caps versus Pens was next level, in my opinion. Dueling hat tricks, etc. Malkin was truly awesome against Carolina in that playoffs, though. For that playoffs, I'd say 1) Ovechkin 2) Malkin 3) Crosby.

CBC aired part of this interview during the first intermission of Game One of the MTL/WSH series...

Saturday, two days before making his Stanley Cup Playoffs debut against the Washington Capitals, Demidov was asked by reporters if Alex Ovechkin, the NHL’s new goals king, was one of his idols growing up.

“Uhhhh,” Demidov responded as he thought through his response. “I love Malkin much better than Ovi.”

I'm surprised he was that blunt in saying that publicly before the series. You kind of expect a young player to pander more to an icon of the sport, even if he prefers another player or isn't a big fan.
I'm glad he replied this way. I hate leading questions like that. They should have asked something like, "who was your biggest idol growing up?"

See, if he had, to that question, answered that he liked Malkin, then you would have absolutely no issues with that. It would be a completely normal, no-news answer. But due to the leading question, now you think that his answer's strange.

It pretty much was framed in a way that only has one right answer: "Yes I looked up to Ovechkin, he's always been an inspiration," or whatever. It's effectively psychological manipulation, and I'm glad he overcame it and actually said what he really thinks, even if you don't like it.

Peak Malkin might have been better than both Crosby and Ovechkin.
Peak Malkin was the closest thing stylistically to Mario that I’ve seen in this generation of hockey.

Why are people surprised that a Russian who literally just came to the NA gave a blunt quote? Dude is in a completely new environment and English is obviously not his first language.
