*Manuel Alberg had previously retired from professional hockey in 2022, but is now trying for a comeback and has been given a chance by Iserlohn to try out for the team. The try out contract runs until the end of August. I really hope he found his passion and joy for the game again and can make a comeback.

Is there a comprehensive and up to date list of roster rules for the DEL anywhere?

I can't find a comprehensive list, but as far as import players are concerned, each team may have up to 11 import players on the full roster, but only a maximum of 9 of them may be dressed for each game.
I also believe that for each game a team has to dress at least 3 U23 players, but I am not totally sure about this.

Also, there may be changes before the upcoming season. Usually they announce any rule changes in July/August.

Should I come across anything official (there is nothing about this in the official rule book as far as I could tell), I will let you know.

Thank you. Yeah, I was able to get to the 11 non-EC players with some confidence. It's the U23 player thing that I really can't seem to nail down myself. And also the old thing: You don't know what you don't know. Is there some rule where, say, you can not buy more than one DEL2 player per year or can you not make a player transfer more than three times or whatever...

I had been running some U22 numbers (before I had dug deeper into the rules of this specific league) and every team had 3+ U22 players last season except Fischtown and Wolfsburg (2), but that number jumps up when you include U23.

And yeah, I grabbed the official rulebook to no avail. Then I started trying to google things in German, which I'm sure was pointless haha

I found an article from 2018 where they explained (or tried to) the plans for the roster rules (particularly U23 and U20 players) going forward. I will summarize the important points. However, I am not 100% sure if they have made additional changes to this plan since 2018 that were not covered back then.

Back then each team could dress 19 skaters (no age restrictions). Over the following years they reduced that number step by step to 16. The remaining 3 spots can only be filled with players of the U23 category. If they can't or won't dress 3 U23 players they will have to dress fewer than 19 skaters.
These U23 players also have to be eligible to play for the German national team.

Before the 18/19 season each DEL team was allowed to register a total of 32 player licenses over the course of a season (U20 players did not count against the total). Starting with the 18/19 season the total number of licenses was increased to 33, but only 29 could be regular licenses (players 24 and older). The remaining four licenses were reserved for U20 and U23 players. However only one license for an U23 player was allowed the rest had to be U20.
U20 goalies are not covered by this rule and don't count against the total.
Teams that qualify for the Champions Hockey League are permitted 2 additional licenses.

By the 2025/26 season the number of total licenses per season shall be reduced to 31 and only 25 of those licenses are available for players 24 and older, the rest is reserved for U23 and U20 players (no information if there are further restrictions)

Unfortunately there is no specific information about the current rules.

Link: The full article in German

There has been a lot of discussion that last couple of years if these rules make any sense, since many of the U23 players don't get significant playing time. It is not rare the see U23 players dressed but never playing a single shift, just to satisfy the rules. And statistically those games count as games played.
Also, once these players turn 24, 50% of them are out of a job in the DEL and move to the DEL2, other lower leagues or retire all together. Sometimes they manage to make it back to the DEL a few years later, most of the times they don't.

This is great, thank you very much!

I'm a little surprised by the lack of licenses overall. So I guess I should infer that the German junior leagues, like DNL U20 for instance, where there is a Düsseldorfer EG U20 club (and a team of the same name in DEL) act more independently from one another than meets the eye...

Because if each DEL club is only permitted 3 to 5 U20 licenses, they can't possibly fill a junior club or any other minor-pro affiliate that they may have an agreement with. Maybe there's as much of a disconnect between the pro and junior level in Germany as there is between an NHL club and a major junior club then? That's interesting, if my inference is true. I wouldn't have guessed that is the situation.

You're very welcome.

Those U20 licenses are just for playing in the DEL. All DEL teams have their own junior teams at the U20, U17, U15, etc. levels with players that have junior licenses.
The thing is that we don't have minor leagu affiliates like NHL teams do in the AHL and ECHL. There are certain partnerships between DEL clubs and DEL2 and Oberliga clubs, where the DEL clubs can send some of their younger players to these teams to get some more playing time and pro experience, but those clubs in DEL2 and Oberliga operate independently and the DEL clubs have no control over them.

I don't have the time right now to get into the whole thing with the "Förderlizenzen" in the DEL2, but if nobody else provides any information on that subject, I will post something either tomorrow or on Sunday.
Now I have to go back to repairing my dad's laptop, which is driving me crazy. :banghead:

I meant to post sooner, but over the weekend my allergies hit me hard and I'm still not able to look at a screen or read something for more than half an hour before my eyes are hurting.

I also had to admit to myself that I still cannot figure out how the "Förderlizenzen" in German hockey work exactly. To oversimplify, it is about allowing players under a certain age (there are different licenses depending on the players age I believe), to play for multiple teams in different leagues in the same season.
There are also some eligibility rules depending on games played. I think, once a player has played 120 DEL games they are no longer able to get a Förderlizenz. There is (or at least used to be) also a rule that players who are playing on a DEL2 team with a Förderlizenz from a DEL team, have to play a minimum number of regular season games for the DEL2 team in order to be eligible to also play for the team in the playoffs. For skaters it is 20 games and for goalies it is 300 minutes of ice time.

Previously, each DEL team could only send their prospects to one specific team in the DEL2 they had an agreement with. That was changed recently, so now they can send their prospects to different teams, as long as those teams have an open spot. That way there is more flexibility for the teams to find the best situation for each of their youngsters.

I am not sure if I made things clearer or just added more confusion. I guess I should quit while I'm behind.

During the routine physical of Tobias Eder before the season doctors discovered a malignant tumor.
He is receiving treatment and will hopefully make a full recovery.
