Opportunity to make a bigger deal? Trouba, Kakko and 1st for Zegras.
Nope, Zegras probably isn't traded this summer and if he is, it should be for a young, defensive RD that can play with Mintyukov. Kakko would be a decent add for the Ducks but that's an offensive downgrade (Ducks offense is already bad) and a late 1st isn't going to move the needle. There is no main piece in a Zegras deal there.

That's fair. All I will answer to that is that to me Ducks offense is stacked, it's just going to take a couple years to get going. And Zegras seems very much expendable in that group. Also getting a young stud defensive RD for Zegras is going to be a heroic task, so good luck with that.

San Jose would be crazy to bring in Trouba on waivers. They already did that with Goodrow so you’d have 2 teammates stuck on a team and VERY unhappy about it. Talk about a recipe for a toxic locker room. You do not want your kids being exposed to that type of stuff. Not to mention the seriously bad reputation SJ would get amongst the NHLPA as a team who gives zero fks about what players want or their family situation.

Not necessarily a young stud, we wouldn't be looking for a true #1 D. More like what Manson was when the Ducks were good. A guy that can play higher in the lineup than what he is as an individual because he works well with his d partner. At his best, Manson wouldn't have gotten a young, 2 time 60+ point forward, so probably a better version of him.

As a long time Sharks fan, I call malarkey. Doug Wilson spent 20 years trying to build San Jose up as a sought after free agent destination. Tons of effort poured in with the grand results of the biggest UFA acquisitions being past their primes Rob Blake, Paul Martin, and Joel Ward. At the same time Vegas has been extremely ruthless with how they move players in and out; and they get respect for being an org that is solely focused on winning. It makes no sense for the Sharks to not make a move that improves their team because it may not entirely align to a players image of their perfect life.

This is to say, that being overly concerned with hurting Trouba’s fee fees when the Sharks aren’t the team waiving him is a bunch of croc. Trouba’s a professional and if having a guarantee that he couldn’t being waived was paramount to him should have instructed his agent to make monetary concessions to lock in a NMC for the full term of his current contract.

And if Trouba REALLY doesn’t like not having control of his destination he is fully capable of mutually terminating his contract with the Rangers and signing a new deal with whatever team he wants. So acting like Trouba hasn’t had or doesn’t have agency here is a bunch of piece of shit.

This is completely incorrect and backwards - Im not sure where to even begin. In short, no Trouba and Goodrow would not be toxic in the locker room. They are professionals. And no, SJ would not have a bad reputation for claiming a player.

At this point we should just start speculating what the sweetener is gonna be? Do they retain 30%? Do they take bad money back? Do the include Kakko? Or do they do multiples of those things?

It is their some waiver mischief going down?

Think we’re already past the stage of a return happening.

The only way he goes on waivers, is if SJ has a deal with someone else. The problem is, they have no retention spots. So maybe Chicago or Anaheim? Or the Sharks taking Husso and Holl from Detroit let’s say.

Just can’t see Trouba playing in SJ, and at the end of the day, don’t see him blocking a Detroit trade. He may have put them on his list today, just to control the process some.

Those discussions have likely already happened. Maybe why Detroit now has 5 goalies after today.

Just a note? Yzerman is NOT having a presser today, which is usually part of July 1. Read into that what you may.

NHLPA would contest that within literal seconds of the fax
Well that's not the way it would go down. Rangers put him on waivers 15 teams would have the possibility of taking him first. Then Detroit turns around and trades a cap dump to The Rangers. At least two players involved one from each team. Then the PA could bitch all they want to no avail. This has happened before I'm sure. However the ship of him going to Detroit if there ever even was one was has sailed. Yzerman is tight lipped about trades all this noise is coming from New York

So it's a de facto trade, done because the player refused to waive his NMC.

Right, the PA immediately contests. I don't know if they'd win, but they're obviously going to fight teams colluding to get around NMCs like this.

That's easy the second trade doesn't need to happen right away. I get what you're saying but it's easy to get around.

What do you mean “real dollars”? Cap hit would be the same no? Or are you saying they only need to pay $6m per year for the remainder of the contract?
Trouba has a cap hit of $8M for two more years, but he's only being paid $6M per year as his deal was front-loaded.
