He has said some really dumb shit in the past no question about it. But we can stop the "locker room cancer" aspect. He is not as a matter of fact he is well liked by his team mates. The cancer in NY was Georgiev not TDA. Pretty much every Ranger that was on that team with him confirmed it and his time as a Cane was the same.

If you actually dig into his past back to junior, between what was reported, and for other stuff (like leaving Tampa) what was rumored all pointed to authority issues.


Junior and NHL he got punished for spats with officials. There was the name calling stuff so while he might generally be popular I wouldn’t be surprised if at least some teammates didn’t like the dude

The coach actually did say the staff had issues with his attitude. He had been benched before and talked to by coach staff, and he basically said they warned him.

How exactly was he blackballed? Has he not played in hundreds of games since whatever twitter controversy he was involved in?

I’d suggest listening to the people who have been watching him play (namely Canes fans) instead of parroting tired cancel culture tropes with no basis in fact.

Not to mention the fact that the poster was ironically pointing out his belief that the world is a crazy place suggesting it is worse to be Bowman who turned a blind eye to some horrible abuse and therefore apparently doesn't deserve a second chance even after taking accountability, paying a price, and doing the work to understand his mistakes; all the while appearing to support said alternative political beliefs or the right to hold them when the central theme of those beliefs is in support of a man who has actually ABUSED, been accused of more than just the one rape and dozens of assaults, convicted of 34 felonies, arrested and charged on dozens of other counts and has paid off porn stars to not go public with their affairs; all without remorse, accountability, or learning to be better.

I have no idea if TD is a horrible person, but the fact that he is carrying baggage around would very likely lead any GM to question his fit in any team, regardless of his political views.

The answer is who he likes politically.

Twice suspended in 2014 by the OHL for on ice comments to a teammate and then to an official.

Drafted by Tampa in 2014 19th OA. GM and coach stated that they felt his issues were overblown and he’d grow up. Later that year playing in the AHL he was given two 10-minute misconducts again for his conduct on the ice and then subsequent comments towards an official.

TB saw enough in two years that they traded him to Coyotes for the 37th pick. He again got suspended 3 games for getting physical with referee trying to control a scrum.

Traded for a 2nd time in three years to NYR. Makes a comment to a teammate and a physical altercation breaks out. NYR buys him out.

Gets signed by the Canes who then trade his rights to Philly. Gets into it with the Philly fanbase on social media, gets suspended for spearing. Bought out again which made him the first player in NHL history to have his contract bought out multiple times.

This is without mentioning the dozens of games over his career he was either a healthy scratch or benched for on and off ice issues.

But yes, let’s pretend it only because of who he likes politically.

Always been conflicted about Tony…I don’t like his political views, I don’t like his defensive game, and I don’t think he’s worth the roster spot

That being said…I do a charity tournament he plays in, I live right around where he grew up, and everyone says he’s the nicest/kindest guy around. I don’t know him super well, but we have a few mutual connections - and every time I’ve met him he’s been nothing but welcoming and friendly.

Also fwiw - he didn’t grow up with a silver spoon in his mouth. From what I remember family had a very modest middle class home.

I think the teammates hating him is completely off base - he had a few Flyers on his team last year in his tourny, and I guess we’ll see next week if he puts in another team.

But yeah, don’t love his stances, but everything you hear from people around the rink here is that he’s generous and a nice guy

Good post. One of the few rational people in this thread who aren't just assuming he's a terrible person because of something they read online.

I get he’s not great defensively and I’m not going to pretend I know his game well because I don’t watch him play regularly, but I can’t help but think that all of the people calling him names in this thread just don’t like his politics. And that’s pretty pathetic, petty and childish. No matter what your beliefs are. He’s an athlete, not a politician.

Article no I dont but it was pretty public on HF after the Canes signed him and people were going batshit that he was getting another chance. There were multiple threads on here with pictures of him at former Rangers weddings, if I'm not mistaken Canes brass said outright they asked Skjei and Fast about him an both gave the team a glowing review of TDA, and then there's how Georgiev has acted since that issue. Georgiev is not well liked and at the very least leads some credence to him being a big reason the 2 of them had a dust up.

You're right that it's not politics keeping him out, it's probably closer to two thirds or higher that agrees with him. I don't think he's a general locker room cancer because Carolina was willing to take him back, maybe he took the Ranger situation as a wake up call (doubt it).
He's a guy that needs to get handcuffed to a really sound partner to mitigate his defensive issues and he didn't produce offensively well enough the last 2 years to waste a partner like that on. The only situation that I think he can be best used is with a younger defenseman that is going to play his way up a lineup along a season. (he played his best in Philly with Cam York). At the same time you don't want his bad tendencies to rub off on them. That's probably why he will not receive an NHL PTO until an injury happens preseason.

I was like just about everyone else thinking he was a locker room cancer. Really up until Carolina took him back for a second round. If he was such a cancer there is no way in hell Rowdy Roddy Brind'Amour would have accepted him back in the fold. I believe RBA has more pull when it comes to one-ice personnel than the average coach.

His fan base image might have something to do with him having problems maintaining any kind of career stability. That I believe is giving NHL GMs waaay too much credit when it comes to character concerns in players, and management for that matter.

When it comes right down to it, offensive stat line numbers aside, he's just not that reliable defensively. Looks to be trending downward. Even taking into consideration he was on a poor Philadelphia blue line. He certainly did not play well on his second go around with Carolina, with a much better supporting cast.

He's no longer a good riddance to bad rubbish type of player, but if he goes KHL, he won't be missed by me.
