He was 7th D on one of if not the best D core in the league, he can easily be a mid pair guy on a team like say the Utah club, or Columbus. Theres a spot for him in the NHL. Just need a team to give him a shot.

He wouldn’t be top four even strength on either of those teams and he wouldn’t be on either team’s #1 PP unit which renders him a complete specialist who has to sheltered heavily.

If any team and coach knew how to get the best from him it was Carolina and RBA, where DeAngelo had his best season. There was no meat on the bone last year.

Offensive oriented guys can tend to peak early and there’s nothing to indicate he was even a decent blueliner last year. The “well he’s got more talent than “X” players with deals” is irrelevant. We can hypothesize on which players would be the best at pond hockey or street hockey all day long. The fact was TDA needs to be “effective” to have a job, let alone a top four job.

I can buy the concept of “he should have at least a minimum one-way depth role contract in the NHL but his issues, whether real or exaggerated, are causing teams to sour enough that they just don’t think a depth player is worth the headache” theory.

But this is not a top four NHL defenseman who is getting (rightly or wrongly) black-balled by the NHL. Plenty of players have had good seasons, fallen off before 30, and ended up abroad even though their names still ring with recognition. If TDA absolutely pulverizes the KHL this season, there will probably be interest in bringing him back.

Jake Bean outperformed him and we literally gave him away for free - we could have kept him but we didn't bother qualifying him. Adam Boqvist has similar question marks and put up a similar performance last season, and we paid to get rid of him. And yet you still think DeAngelo would be "mid pair" here?

Tony is gonna light up the KHL. It’ll be fun to watch. Maybe those KHL fans with blinders, will finally admit how far the quality of play has dropped in recent years.

When McLeod is penciled in as a “1st Line C” and Tony DeAngelo will likely lead the league in Dman scoring, maybe people will finally figure it out.

It’s just a different game than it used to be in the KHL. That’s what happens when all of those running Russian Hockey, all came to North America in the 90s and early 2000s to coach, leaving Russia’s minor and junior systems, in the hands of “System” coaches, who despised the wide open game. 20 years later, the game has suffered because of it.

Hopefully with so many former NHL players getting involved with Russian Hockey.. who all came from the “skills era”, they will be able to change the core beliefs of the failed system guys, and we see things get back to where they belong in Russia.

It’s a great example of how closed minded Hockey needs to be a thing of the past. It’s funny cause I remember when both Hockey Canada and USA Hockey fought against skill development too. There was a ton of hate for these Russian coaches who came over to America. Then all of a sudden these Russian coached teams, started lighting leagues up and producing top players for Junior hockey. Took Canada another 5 years to accept it after USA Hockey did, but it’s been the best thing for ice hockey in North America in generations. Where Russia went the other way. Lol. Back to old school systems.

Seems disputed, but if it's true I think he'd absolutely dominate there. I'd be excited to watch him play with that much open ice and in that style of hockey, however I do wish him the best and hope he manages to stay in the NHL.

Sure if you say so. He played meaningful minutes on Carolinas blueline (who ny the way got rid of Bean before bringing in D'Angelo for his first stint)

Our blueline is considered bad because of ability to defend. DeAngelo would actually make a bad thing worse.

He's not only a terrible person, he's a massive liability in his own zone. Regardless of offensive output, his defensive play is nowhere close to an acceptable standard.

I will disagree on the “terrible person” moniker. He's certainly had some issues, but I haven’t seen a guy locked up for domestic violence or DWI. NFL players get locked up constantly and people forget it in a month. What has ADA done? With that said, his defensive play really leaves you wanting. I really do think he should have a Gustavsson type career.

Damn. He was the best player on the ice and the difference when they took my Bruins out 2 years ago bc Ullmark is the worst playoff goalie in the NHL. Thought he cleaned his act up but even so people who are legit scum never truly change. Some bottom feeder like Utah should want him but I guess not. Carolina and Philly both have 2 fanbases that don’t care about off ice issues as well and his baggage didn’t matter.

He was pretty popular with the Canes, he fit in with the group well. Just didn’t defend as well as he did the first time around, I think a bit of that was on Orlov but TDA never turned it around. That’s why he’s gone, not for any of the other vitriol around here. Hope he does well, I think he turned the corner on a lot of the issues he had when he was younger.
