Dean Lombardi was on hockey central today. It's going fo replay at 10am (pst) on the NHL Network. It will also be available as a podcast later today.

It was a good interview. He talked Voynov and his possible return, the trade deadline and the effect Voynov has on it. He talked the teams struggles in the regular season and his feeling of not having a small speedy team. Even mentions Jones might start again tonight. It was a good interview. He comes on15-20 minutes into the show.

Thanks for the heads-up. It just finished on Hockey Central.

I find it amazing that the league has offered no guidance or direction to Lombardi on the whole Voynov thing. If the league doesn't know what its doing and/or is incompetent on the matter, they should have let Voynov play. Simple as that.

"Wait and see" what happens has cost the team and the player an incredible amount (notwithstanding that he is getting paid). It's bull ****.

I disagree completely, but that's for another thread.

I'm uncertain how I feel about it, the only thing I know is the league and the PA should have figured out something relating to cap space well before they did.

The league has been pretty bush league about this.

Nice interview.

Tanks for posting it!

The problem doesn't just lie with the league. It's with the PA, too! This whole ordeal ultimately hurts no one but the Organization! The league looks good with their stance concerning DV. The PA looks good cuz Voynov is still getting paid. Voynov is getting a paid vacation, though as a competitor he is not enjoying it to fullest I'm sure. Plus, it's not fun going through legal stuff. Ultimately, the Kings are butt rammed as they are missing a top 3 d man without compensation of any kind, personnel wise or money wise.

Exactly.

But you'd better believe the PA is going to come out guns-a-blazin after the legal issues are resolved one way or another.

Yep if found not guilty they will be in the league's face very quick wanting their player reinstated.
The question comes to if he is found guilty to some lesser charge that is a misdemeanor. How to they react then. Hang him out to dry or still fight?
Because I think if he is found guilty of the felony charge against him the PA will let the league burn him in just about any fashion they choose as they sit by and cheer it on. Just to look good.

For sure, but as you mention, it's that 'middle ground' of a misdemeanor or even 'not guilty' but with some pretty brutal-sounding evidence that will be interesting to see play out, i.e. the NHL could still potentially suspend him for the season.

I agree with you on a misdemeanor plea because Voynov would be pleading guilty to the charges, thereby admiting the evidence against him is real.

However, if he is found "not guilty" by a jury, then in effect the evidence is nullified. I can't see the league continuing a suspension based on testimony/evidence that has been nullified.

This is what I think too. I have a difficult time seeing the league finding any grounds to continue Voynov's suspension if he is found not guilty or the charges dropped etc. It is why I can't see Voynov accepting any sort of a plea deal as well. If he does it could possibly destroy his NHL career so he has everything to lose and nothing to gain by doing anything other than letting a jury determine his case.

I want to agree. Just not sure if in the court of public opinion that the NHL is operating in would feel the same way about evidence being nullified.

If the charges were dropped altogether I think that would be a different story.

At this point, if the legal process were to go through and Voynov were cleared, would this be any kind of news to anybody other than die hard Kings fans who were getting Voynov back?

Yes.

1. The hockey world is watching.

2. There are a ton of people that despise the Kings and will use that as their soapbox to hate on the Kings some more whether or not they usually care about DV on an even more-than-passing-interest basis.

3. Domestic Violence is still a hot button issue and you can be sure DV groups will be all over every detail of the case that's not kosher.

Like it or not, the Kings org will be under a microscope and their image as well as that of the NHL will be under scrutiny. NHL will be smart to protect their butts. That's why I qualified my statement; if he's cleared entirely, no one can say much. If he instead pleads to a misdemeanor or something, not so much.

4. NHL teams and the NHLPA are watching this intently as it is a prescident setting suspension Bettman handed down. You have to imagine some sort of policy is coming into place after this no matter what, but especially if he's innocent. What will happen if a bitter girlfriend tosses out a assault claim just to get back at a player, is he suspended for a few months as it works its way through the system? If she can come up with a decent story, stick to it and fake a few minor injuries, she could ruin a guy. Is everyone going get the longest suspension in NHL history (and still going) for any domestic violence suggestion, or is it going to be innocent until proven guilty.

This is in the CBA. So unless they are going to somehow amend it after it has been ratified it won't change until the next CBA.
To me the question comes is it only going to be domestic violence. Or will any charges get you suspended now. How about driving under the influence? Since in that case if it is alcohol it could upset many of the leagues biggest sponsors.
But the PA is willing to sit on the sideline because their player is getting paid. I think we would be in a whole other place if this was without pay. It isn't about guilt or innocence.
