23 year old winger, 2 more years after this one at $4 million then still RFA. Can play center in a pinch, but has not been good at it at the NHL level.

Couple of notes:
- only would trade him in a package for an upgrade at forward.
- wouldn't trade him for a rental
- would not trade him simply for a draft pick(s)
- the Devils are tight against the cap

Just seeing what opposing fans peg his value at.

In my ideal scenario, I would love to package him with one of Seamus Casey or even Simon Nemec to get a young impact winger to play with Hughes and Bratt, but not sure how realistic that would be.

Why would NJ move him? His value would be at an all time low, not exactly the best time to be trying to peddle him.
For what it's worth, he's never scored less than 17 goals in any season and has put away at least 20 goals in 2 of his 3 NHL seasons with limited PP time. He's also never missed a game in his NHL career to either injury or being a healthy scratch. Only Nico sees more ice time for forwards on the PK

Bruins should definitely be interested but they don't real fit the bill for what NJ is looking for. Frederic could potentially make sense as he brings a different element to the lineup that could be of interest to NJ -- but Frederic being a UFA probably kills any chance of a deal.

See below.

He is clearly struggling and could use a change of scenery. That is why I suggested a package to move him elsewhere for an upgrade.

NJD needs to add to our pool of PKing forwards, not take away from it.

Keeping a guy simply because he can play on the PK is a terrible reason to keep him. We have plenty of capable PK forwards.

IMO he's not a guy you discard simply because he's not producing at the rate you're accustomed to. You're also selling his short by implying that they have other capable PK forwards, but they don't have another one like him. He's a puck hound with a never ending engine. Maybe he doesn't turn into a top 6 guy like they'd hoped but he's an important piece to NJ.

For all of these "struggles" he's had this season, he's seen his ice time increase simply because he does more than put up points.

Did you just say you're open to trading Nemec? You should definitely not be open to that. If the Devils were I'd offer any 2 pieces from our roster for Nemec alone. That includes Parekh and Coronato.

We don't.

We are already playing guys like Hughes, Palat, and Bratt on the PK in a role they don't really belong in because we don't have enough capable PKers.

The PK is a key aspect of a team.

It's basically just Hischier of what I'd consider quality PK guys if you move Mercer.

This is not the type of trade we should be making. Trading Casey would be extremely foolish.

I don't see a realist trade option, but I could see Montreal being very interested in Mercer.
The Florida/Calgary pick and the many 2nd rounders MTL has could be used as currency so NJ gets their young forward; Armia at 50% could fill the 4th line, PK role.
So something would be possible but NJ has to make a subsequent move, too.

Nemec+Mercer for extended Nik Ehlers?
No, not even close.

Think a late 1st+minor asset like every other deadline rental ever

Also, for future reference, slapping the word "extended" on a rental doesn't magically triple what teams will pay for them.

If rumors are true we would not have to part with Mercer for Freddy (who Iike alot in NJ)

I am open to the idea, but it would have to be for the correct player.

meh, I just don't agree. Why do Hughes and Bratt not belong in a PK role? Bratt killed penalties as a rookie.

I understand you love Casey. And again, I am not trading him just for any random player. I think at a certain point, we are going to have to trade a DMam for a comparable winger. It is not a bad problem to have for sure.
Nemec+Mercer for extended Nik Ehlers?

I absolutely love Ehlers, but he is a bit older than I would like. I don't think he has that kind of value.
Michael Bunting at 50% for Mercer.

see ya nah lol no thanks on this.

Because I don't think they are good at it.

I have seen them in that role and they are not that good.

I'm not even sure how fond I am of Hischier as a PK guy.

Sure, but aside from Luke, Casey is the last dman we should be trading.

Nemec is the guy you move on from - especially considering the way he's been playing in Utica.

Like I said, I am certainly open to the idea of trading Nemec for a comparable young forward.

I also believe that he is still injured from the hit he took in the World Championships this summer. Plus that Utica team is brutal so I don't put a lot of stock into much down there tbh.

The team is bad, but the attitude and work ethic questions raised in that post are alarming.

And Nemec was on a downward trend in the back half of last year, well before being injured.

So is your opinion that Simon Nemec peaked at 19 years old?
