Prospect Info: David Reinbacher - Laval Rocket edition

I'm also going from the team history on how they have always mis-managed injuries ... scary pattern I hope they no longer follow

that doesn't make much sense though since each injury is different, and unless you have the medicals, how do you know what they are telling the player vs what the player is telling them. As an example, the story on how Primeau fell to the 7th round was that he hid an injury from the staff, his #'s sucked so he fell. How much does stuff like that go on? I don't know but it's more to my point that fans just lack so much info that they just can't know that speculating just leads to Dr Recchi posts.

He was solid. He got alot of positive comments in the GDT

Regarding Reinbacher, I find that he flashes so many good things and the highs are very high. When he's on top of his game, he can pass the puck, retrieve it, battle along the boards, carry it, get open, etc. He shows a wide array of skills and abilities on top of being a RHD. He just needs to stay healthy and put it all together, all while handling the pressure of Montreal and not being Michkov. That's not an easy road for him and I hope he's strong enough mentally.

Like I’ve been saying for a long time, his likely upside is something similar to Patrice Brisebois. With his injuries though, it’s looking like a real possibility that he doesn’t ever even reach that. Maybe a taller Josh Gorges at this point. Or maybe nothing if he can’t stay healthy. Things aren’t looking good, in any case.
I think he's more like Eric Desjardins than Patrice Brisebois. He's like 6'3" and 210lbs now, taller than Brisebois and heavier than Desjardins. I don't want to overhype him but I think he has some intangibles.

He’s all of 1” taller than Brisebois lmao.

As much as I like Mailloux I find Reinbacher so much better defensively

It's because he knows where to be on the ice while Mailloux is running around most of the time.

His poise in the defensive zone is impressive for a rookie and his 1st pass from his own zone is top notch.

Another thing I really like about his game is the fact that he's always ready to take a hit to make the play.

Skating = 10/10
1st pass = 10/10
Hockey IQ = 8/10
Offensive awareness = 9/10
Defensive awareness = 7/10

Unless his body fall apart, he's going to be at minimum a 2nd pairing defenceman.

My projection = he's going to be a solid #2 defenceman providing between 35-45pts.

I refuse to write off Mailloux though. He literally had one year of junior hockey before turning pro.

That, and people tend to forget that most dmen dint hit their NHL primes until their mod-late 20s.

As long as he's committed to continuous improvement, his overall play & understanding of the nuances of positioning, stick work, leverage etc to be effective in the dzone against elite NHL talent, will undoubtedly grow considerably.

The unique tools he brings to the table won't go anywhere, but those other aspects getting to even depth NHL competency would leave him as useful NHL player... If he can get them to top 4 level, he'll be a very good asset to have

As it stands
And I think also the correct thing to do and how to approach this now is

NOT making Reinbacher start in the NHL next year actually
Give the spot to Mailloux instead (he's the 1 year senior anyway), see how he lasts for 20-40 games and then depending on his play evaluate continuing or making a 'switch'

And have Reinbacher as RD1 in AHL for bulk games , and depending on how Mailloux is doing in the NHL, assess at that point to keep it status quo or make a 'switch'

I think that's how HuGo tackle the 'NHL 3RD' spot for next year (and we'd still need another RD from trade/FA actually)
But at least these 2 kids are free lol

I can see both of them getting alot of games next year and I agree that Mailloux who has played 2 complete AHL seasons deserves a hard look first.

Those evaluations sound insane. At 10/10 there is literally no room for improvement, you are basically describing Bobby Orr.

Insane? Did you see the proposal of some guy on the trade thread about getting the 4th OV to get Desnoyers? That's insane !!

Don't you think that Matheson skating is a 10/10 because I do.
