Prospect Info: David Reinbacher - Laval Rocket edition

Just for curiosity, if Levshunov and Demidov were available at the 5th overall selection last year with only the things we know at that time, do you still take Demidov or that smooth skating RD Levshunov ?

If I'm Montreal, I take Demidov because I have Reinbacher.

If I'm Chicago, I still take Levshunov. Worked out for them, they now have Levshunov and are going to be able to get a Martone, or a Desnoyers, or a Hagens to add to Bedard. There's not a right shot defenseman in this class remotely close to Reinbacher or Levshunov.

Michkov or Leonard would have been the better choice, and Reinbacher still hasn't impressed me. People are reaching for compliments at this point. 'The way Reinbacher reaches in the corners and comes out with the puck 40% of the time is a clear example of why you always take a RHD when available' just total nonsense. He's a 4-5 RHD at this progression, so yay ?
Leonard has 2 points in 15 NHL games. He would be called a flop had we drafted him.

oh for sure, but at this point I'm not ever sure Reinbacher will have a career with his injuries either

And what Leonard did exactly in the NHL to show you he will be better than Reinbacher ? Leonard still hasn’t proved anything yet.
Plus he looks like a complementary winger.
I would still take my chance with minutes munching 2-way RD with size and smooth skating.

On probation right now...

nothing at all, but at least he's already playing and Reinbacher looks broken
I could be wrong, I was just admitting who my original player was good or bad and not changing my story. Some people here change their usernames when they are wrong, I'm still surviving on my bloopers and draft choices through the years good or bad.

Yeah but the point is Struble. What he's good for really? Habs can't get better in their line-up?

You won't get a significant upgrade to Struble on the 3rd pairing in the sub-1M range. He's young, cheap and can play regular shifts in the NHL. That's his selling points at the moment.

The team will absolutely need cost-controlled depth down the line and he could be that.

I mean, Leonard's pedigree looks pretty solid in that, his play should translate to become a rugged goal scoring winger at the NHL level.

Reinbacher meanwhile blew out his knee so hard that it required surgery, all on his own. Feels bad man.

Reinbacher could very well be the better player in the end, but as of right now it looks a bit rough for ol' Reinbacher.

meh - calling Reinbacher 4-5 RHD now would be like judging Larry Robinson one-quarter of the way through his first AHL season. Robinson wasn’t a star out of the gate either - but he had time to grow (check out what Larry had to say about his call up to teh Habs on Nilan's podcast) . I'm sure AF not comparing Reinbacher to Robinson, but just pointing out he deserves that same leash - the dude's only played maybe 30 games in the AHL vs Robinson's 1.5 seasons with the AHL. The ability to tolerate delay, I hear, is a virtue.

Or you can see that his production dropped by 11 points without Will Smith driving his line and that his performance in most big games at the collegiate level were down right terrible.

Wait wha?

He had 30 goals in 37 games without Big Willie Style, that's pretty good, no?

So you're saying Will Smith is his Suzuki to his Slafkovsky? :sarcasm:

It's obviously good.. he's a good prospect, but there's red flags in his profile. It's a completely grass is greener thing to be like well Reinbacher had a knee injury this year, so Leonard is the better pick.. when Leonard's playmaking production fell off a cliff without Will Smith and has generally left a lot on the table when playing great competition in the playoffs of the NCAA.

Pretty tough to get a 'big game player' label when you fail to deliver in big games.

Well of course we won't know for many years who is the better pick, but yeah right now, with Reinbacher's sustained consistent injury issues, it feels a little dark right now (that could totally change, but it is what it is for now).

I suspect the Habs had banked on Reinbacher being able to step in sooner rather than later too, because of playing in a men's league, etc... shame that so far it hasn't worked out according to plan at all.

It's not sustained injury issues. He's had one major injury and it was this year.

This narrative needs to die.

With Leonard my concern was more his size for his style of play, as he clearly likes to hit and be physically involved but how will he hold up over 82 + playoffs year after year. If Reinbacher keeps developing his offense and learns to use his size to his advantage better, he's certainly going to be a very solid NHLer at worst outside of any health issues.
