He's had a rough start in Iowa this year, but was by far their best goalie last year (22-19-4 and .910 vs. 4-14-4 and ,881 from his backup), and is very promising. His lateral movement is his only real flaw from a technical standpoint, but he's so positionally sound and large-sized that it would be surprising to me if he doesn't become an NHL goalie, and probably a starter.

Gus has been really good this year, but his emergence was 2 years ago. So how is he emerging again? Because he was bad last year. His inconsistency should not be ignored, and I would be upset if the Wild moved on from their best goalie prospect just because they have a guy who has some really great stretches. I'd much rather they hedged their bet on Gus with Wallstedt, platooning them. I'd prefer that over having Jiricek, personally, at least as of today.
If this thread has told me anything Wallstedt's value is cratering. At least Jiricek is having success in the A. And he's two years younger. Why are they even in the same conversation. Again, this is what this thread has taught me.

Gustavsson is currently arguably one of the best goalies in the NHL. He’s at the age where you sign a 7-8 year deal. He’s going to be UFA after next season and the Wild now have a Preds type dilemma - do they re- sign a proven goalie long term or let him go and ride the hot young prospect. If you prefer the former I don’t see why the Wild won’t entertain a Wallstedt trade

Don't need to decide now. Can wait and see if Gus continues it into next season first.

Wallstedt value cratering while being a, just turned, 22yr goaltender with his pedigree is certainly a take. His value is still the value the day he was drafted to the team ready to make that commitment; a future NHL starter with room for more. The team isn’t going to throw that away knowing the investment they signed up for when they drafted him at this stage. He’s a nonstarter in a trade such as this.

Yes, he is playing that way right now. He also was playing that way two years ago. He was not playing that way the majority of last year, so I'd prefer to be a little bit careful with my expectations and prefer to hedge my bet on him.

I'd still be willing to trade Wallstedt, but my personal price for him would be higher than Jiricek because I see a strong use for him still.

If this thread has told me anything Wallstedt's value is cratering. At least Jiricek is having success in the A. And he's two years younger. Why are they even in the same conversation. Again, this is what this thread has taught me.
Did you reply to the wrong post? This seems adjacent at most, but I'll humor it. Wallstedt has also had success in the AHL. He's also had success in the NHL. Both good and bad games in both leagues, with the good outweighing the bad. I'm not sure how that implies "cratering", but I haven't read the whole thread so maybe you're bringing some other opinions into your reply to my post.

I had been of the opinion before entering this thread that it would take one of Yurov, Buium, or Wallstedt to get a deal done for Jiricek, and I'm firmly against paying that price, so I'd hope I'm either overvaluing Jiricek or that the Wid lose out.

Now, substitute Jiricek for Wallstedt and you just figured out the hypocrisy of this entire thread.

The Jackets' lack of a stellar track record in developing high-end talent is largely because they've done what you want them to do with Jiricek and Mateychuk right now.
How so? I could be wrong, but going back to Ryan Murray, the only high-end D talent they selected early in the 1st round was Murray and Werenski... and the latter was a full-time NHLer by age 19, no? Murray was drafted 12 years ago and injuries were his biggest issue.

It's not like the Jackets had 5-6 top D taken and had a history of ruining them by playing them at age 20. Not to mention, the NHL has changed a bit over the last 10 years due to the hard cap... more teams are giving their top prospects a chance so they can play talent on the cheap.

Ironically, the main reason Jiricek is rumored to be traded any minute now is due to the way the Jackets handled him.

Except that your current management wasn't the group that drafted Jiricek and they're actively listening to trade offers for him, but other than those two key factors, same situation

Wait, throwing a teenage Klesla in 18-19 minutes a night wasn't the best for his longterm development?
We're referencing a player who was drafted 24 years ago? Lmao. The NHL has changed by leaps and bounds since. Young players play earlier, the league isn't as physical or intimidating, and teams need to round out their rosters with cheap talent. I think the only 2 players who fit this discussion are Murray and Werenski. Both were early 1sts... not late 1sts, 2nds, or 3rd round projects.

Werenski was full-time at 19 and ended up damn good.

Gus was horrible last year. He looks great so far this year, but it's still too early to go ahead and assume that last year was just a fluke. It would be unbelievably risky to put all their eggs in that basket this early on.....and it would be silly to move Wally without giving him a fair opportunity to play with the big club.

Some young players play earlier, not all young players. You are 100% looking at draft position and not on ice play

Columbus isn't going to deal him if we're not getting his full value? And why wouldn't they get full value, he's torn up the AHL when he's been there, he's only struggled in the NHL, which goes for just about every 20yr old dman ever. He's gonna continue to play in the AHL and continue to raise his value further. This is only forced if Jiricek decides he doesn't want to keep playing. But he's not good enough(NHL ready enough) to do that. Look at what happened to Mcgroarty...
He is unhappy in Columbus. Every GM in the league knows this and will leverage it. It’s not unique to this situation, it’s just the way the league works. He’s an intriguing but risky prospect. Lots of guys who are a step slow dominate the AHL but can’t stick in the NHL

He needs a chance to play in the NHL for more than a game here or there for 9 minutes. That's the entire crux of the situation. He and his agent 100% feel he's being jerked around and so far two different GM regimes in Columbus are yo-yoing him. Maybe they are right and Jiricek is being unrealistic and impatient... or maybe they are wrong and their expectations for him as a 20-year-old are unfair?

All of us here are simply debating our opinions. Shortly, we'll know. If Jiricek is traded and steps in immediately and performs well for his new team, then the Jackets will look awful. If he can't make his new team and finds himself back in the minors this year and parts of next, then he is taking a lot longer than most thought and his upside needs to be questioned. However, I don't believe that is the case... it seems to me this is all between the ears and has festered into a game of chicken... and a change of scenery will do wonders for him.

Why do you think you know better than two different front offices? This is the second GM that has kept him cooking in the AHL.

The path that the Jackets have taken with Jiricek is one of patience. Not really that crazy. No matter how you try to spin it.

The crux of the situation may in fact be that he isn't good enough to play in the NHL if two GM regimes think that.

18, 20, 28, 36 years old, doesn't matter, the expectations are to play at an NHL level. You don't get gifted an NHL roster spot just because expectations for 20 year olds should be lower. That's what the AHL is for.

Why do you think you know better than two different front offices?
This is the worst take on the boards, and IMHO it's lazy. How many fans were screaming that Michkov should have been drafted 2nd in 2023 and Demidov 2nd in 2024? There are thousands of cases where the fans "were right" and NHL front offices were abysmal. It happens often.

Of course, the fans aren't always right, but in many cases, they are proven so. Why do we believe that the NHL fraternity, comprised of friends of friends and many old heads who spend hours on the lake or traveling the globe to make some appearances, are automatically correct and infallible?

Some fans spend every waking moment of free time obsessing over players, analyzing them, recognizing patterns, and researching the league. I've been this way since I was 7-8 years old and I'm over 50 now. And there are many like me... who spent tens of thousands of hours obsessing over this game... in many cases we can see clearly because we are not under pressure, aren't operating in a corporate echo chamber, and aren't responsible for balancing internal politics and the morale of head scouts, coaches, staff, personnel, and fans.

This is exactly why "unknown" entrepreneurs can run circles around established brands once they get the opportunity.

As for the Jackets specifically, if they were a dynasty or had an amazing track record of developing talent, it would be extremely hard to question their decisions. But, if we're being honest, evaluating them as an organization (try removing the fan glasses for a moment)... have they been historically great, good, average, or below average... all things considered?

I think you're giving these GMs and scouts too much credit... especially the GMs.

Wild fans don't want to give up Wallstedt and Blue Jackets fans don't want Wallstedt. Why is this even a discussion?
