And we're not giving away our single best prospect for magic beans either.

It goes both ways. :)
I never claimed you would?

I don’t have much of an interest in David Jiricek, and certainly not to the tune of two first round picks and a guy who’s tracking to be our long term third line center.

My point was that the offer from the fellow Habs fan was far too much for a player who hasn’t proven anything yet.

I just want to clarify some things: that website is garbage. Portzline just expanded on something Waddell said in a press conference, which was that they are listening to calls on Jiricek, because, he said, he wouldn't be a good GM if he didn't. There is nothing new here, just the same old rumours. The difference is Portzline specified two teams that had called. Portzline also said that Jiricek had not asked for a trade.

Now, if they do trade Jiricek? Waddell has also stated what they are looking for. A young equivalent player, so comparable to an AHL All-Star in his early 20's. He has also clearly said that the price would be high. As a Blue Jackets fan, I would add a scenario where Jiricek is part of a package for a young star player, but Waddell has not mentioned that specifically.

Find it interesting that anyone think he has as much value as Willander. I personally don’t want this cry baby on the Canucks unless he is a low cost and low risk acquisition. He should step up and prove himself and talk less.

No way I trade Willander for him.
I’m not going that far, but I do agree that he’s not as valuable as Willander, who is having a great season on both ends of the ice. Willander is going to be cheaper for longer, skates like the wind, and has size on top of it.

Jiricek, though, is a player I think would be a great building block for the Canucks. I’d be willing to part with a significant prospect for the chance to acquire him.

I’m not 100% sure what the Blue Jackets are looking for, but if they’re after a similar “star” prospect, I’d be somewhat reluctant yet willing to trade someone like Lekkerimaki for Jiricek.

On paper, I feel that’s fair considering Lekkerimaki is developing at a significant pace as a prospect, while Jiricek’s progression has slowed a bit. Both are considered high-end players.

If Columbus wants more of an NHL-ready package, maybe something like Hoglander and a first-round pick for Jiricek could work. That might fit their system better, giving them a good but occasionally frustrating player in Hoglander, who has huge potential to grow as a replacement.

To keep things concise: I think about it like this.

The Canucks have Hughes and Hronek as a pairing locked in for the next half-decade.

They currently have Soucy under contract for another year after this one. While he’s struggling this season, he was excellent last year, so there’s potential for a rebound.

Myers is signed for the next three years as a veteran presence. With the cap increasing, sitting him when Jiricek and Willander are fully ready is manageable.

Brannstrom is almost guaranteed to be re-signed, considering how impressive he’s been for Vancouver this season.

Juulson is a plug, Forbort provides depth, and Desharnais is another depth option.

What does this all mean?

Here’s a look at Vancouver’s potential future if they gamble and make this move:
  • Hughes - Hronek
  • Brannstrom - Willander
  • Soucy - Jiricek
  • D-Petey - Myers
That’s a strong mix of youth, talent, depth, and size.

I'd like to add him, but doesn't really make sense for the Canucks, with Willander in the pipeline. Not for what it'd realistically cost.

Have to figure like the above mentioned, that it'll probably be a swap for a similar prospect on the cusp but frustrated with their current situation for some reason.

I can't help but wonder if Anaheim doesn't get involved at some point too. They've got a crowded defence corps, but could really use a natural RHD with size like that.

Would something around Zegras for Jiricek and say...Sillinger, make any sense? Maybe the Ducks thrown in a lesser pedigree defenceman as well?

I would be very interested in Jiricek. I doubt we have the pieces to land him, though. Obviously you start with a promising young player as well and then add picks / other prospects CBJ is after.

Evangelista + VGK or TBL 1st

Don't know if that's even close but would start off with that.

I think it's fairly close in a vacuum. The problem with Evangelista is that he'll be another young winger in the organisation (with Johnson, Marchenko, Chinakhov and Brindley already around) while Jiricek fills an organisational need (potential top-pairing RHD). Nashville's unprotected 1st would be what I would set my sights on as Columbus, but I assume Nashville would have little to no interest in that.

It's too bad Nashville already dealt Askarov. Something around Jiricek for Askarov would have been a very solid offer from Nashville.

"One difference comparing Jiříček to Gauthier and McGroarty is that he hasn’t publicly requested a trade from Columbus. All signs indicate he’s happy staying with the Blue Jackets organization albeit with a more consistent role."

This is the important line, I guess. Jiricek has not soured on the CBJ. Defensemen take time to develop and I still think he'll end up wearing the CBJ jersey.

Jiricek is literally playing in the AHL.

“Willingness to play in the AHL” is not a selling point for Columbus nor does it add value to the other player.

There is zero reason for Columbus to consider dealing Jiricek for Mailloux.
Ah yes! no reason whatsoever to be interested in a 21 years old 6’3 220 pounds RHD with 1.08 PPG in the AHL for a disgruntled similar prospect who’s 8 months younger

None whatsoever.

I personally wouldn’t do that lateral trade anyway but it’s just funny to hear all the mental gymnastic Jackets fans are doing right now. Kinda reminds me of the Laine situation where *if* he was traded it would have been for a 1st + good prospect + and ended up costing them a 2nd round pick to move on from him.

Then why are they about to trade him? Because if we’re being honest, Columbus will not get a similar-aged RHD in return. No one does lateral moves just to do a move.

When there’s smoke, there’s usually fire.

Edit: « A more consistent role » lmao. My Brother Jiricek, usage in the NHL is earned. It’s not a god-given right because you were drafted high and he certainly hasn’t earned that usage yet.

Columbus is looking for a player who hasn't popped yet(I guess a player who has potential to be more than what they are/hasn't shown what they are)

Said he doesn't see it with Edmonton, but thinks teams like Nashville, Minnesota, Phillt and others who have a young player they could part with for Jiricek
