Just some fun stats.

# 42 has been worn 12 times in Boston....let's hope he does better than the rest ;)

Bob Sweeney 1987-1989
Mike Millar 1990
John Byce 1990-1992
Brent Hughes 1992-1993
Mikko Makela 1995
Tim Sweeney 1996-1997
Mike Sullivan 1998
Peter Ferraro 1999-2000
P.J. Stock 2002-2004
Pascal Pelletier 2008
Blake Wheeler 2009
Trent Whitfield 2010-2012

I'm kind of "meh" about this signing. While I used to see him play quite a bit when I had Center Ice & like him as a player, he's a year older and more beat up (due to his playing style) than the guy he replaces (Loui Eriksson). And like Loui, Backes has had concussion issues. So I'm not sure the Bruins top 6 really improved with this deal.

I think its got bigger, stronger and less skilled.

If we have Krejci, Backes and Spooner on the roster next season i truly do not understand this signing.

I was in the same boat initially, but after taking some time to think about it, I'm excited to see him play here.

Because Backes is a very good player, I can live with this signing. But I suspect that this move was made for all the wrong reasons. If they think Backes makes Spooner or even Krejci expendable they are idiots, because Backes is a plodder who cannot replace those guys' speed and/or skill. If Backes was brought in to provide the "desire" which they were supposedly missing last season management is even dumber than I thought, because lack of desire wasn't the issue: folding under pressure was. Worst of all, you can be assured that a big reason Backes was signed is that he is a prototypical "big bad Bruin". Stop trying to fit Bruins players to a mold and focus on building a winning hockey club.

Until something actually happens, Backes has already stated he is playing Center and wing most of the time.

Nothing wrong with having a player of his caliber as your 3rd line center. He's big, good on faceoffs and an excellent 2 way player.

What made you jump ship?

He's a good player and it's not my money?

In all seriousness though, they played such a soft game last year that I found myself disinterested a lot of the time, so them adding a guy with some physicality should hopefully shake that up for this year.

Same. As a fan he's the exact type player I want to wear the spoked B. Now I wouldn't love his term or contract on my SIM team, but he makes the team more fun to watch no doubt.

I DO NOT however want to see he and Beleskey on the same line with Krejci. I'd like to see Backes in the middle with Spooner on the left side, but our RW are pretty weak.

Agreed. Putting him on the wing with MB and centered by DK is a waste of time. Give DK players that compliment his game and style and let Backes play his natural spot at center. My fear is that won't happen though because of the weak RW options, like you mentioned.

Looks like my beer league team, haha, other than Wheeler.

What a bunch of plugs.

I don't understand why this is an issue to so many.

Or do we not understand that he's likely playing a wing position unless someone else is moved out?

I have a feeling they are going 3 headed monster down the middle. Claude is tired of Spooner at C and loved having every line have a defensively responsible center (Bergeron,Krejci,Kelly,Campbell).... Backes is gonna play center mostly even if a center isn't dealt IMO.

The guy is going to compete and finish his checks. It was something we enjoyed from Beleskey this past year. He was also one of the Blues players this playoffs that you could say gave his all this run. When the team talks about "too many passengers", they won't be talking about Backes.

Good signing with some quality leadership attached.

I strongly disagree. What a gigantic waste of money for what amounts to not even a real upgrade.

Backes could potentially be a center in special teams and/or in case of injury. Otherwise he's a perfect fit on Bergy's right.

If we signed him to play third line center when we already had one who is far younger, cheaper and outscored Backes last season, while making no effort to fill the gaping hole on the RW, the entire management staff should be fired with actual flames.

Same. He's a player that will put his team ahead of his individual stats. Also, having him and Marchand to get under the skin of their opponents is a plus.

Did anyone else see how crushed Backes was when the Blues were eliminated this year? The guy clearly wants to win. I'm just not sold that Loui had the same passion for winning as Backes does.

He was crushed and looked like the one guy on the Blues that wanted it the most. We want compete level on this team, we got somebody with the right compete level. Still remember him on his Tour De (Team) Canada fights after the Olympics.

I was excited from the start, albeit not a fan of the contract and I wish we also brought back Loui if there really is no plan for the defense.

I keep reading here Backes was promised center? Too bad, he'd be great at RW with Krejci.

Vatrano Krejci Backes
Marchand Bergeron Hayes
Beleskey Spooner Pastrnak
