san jose seems like a perfect spot for nurse. they have enough cap to take his entire contract and orlov is their only non-elc defenseman under contract for next season. sharks have been drafting well, may have more forward prospects than spots for them. maybe something around graf?
"The entire contract'

And you want Graf? LoL

My friend, to get anyone to eat that contract of a bottom 4 dman at 9.5m , you attach a sweetener and have nothing of value coming back.

Nobody takes the worst contract in the NHL at full value AND sends an asset for it.

Edmonton has to pay up to move it. Think "Edmonton attaches a 1st to dump Nurse" and you have a better idea of his non value

There is a reason TSN broadcasters are joking that there are cricket emojis in Bowman 's inbox

The more I think about it, the more I think he COULD MAYBE benefit from a more structured team that doesn’t force the play through certain players. A Vegas/Florida type environment where everyone is engaged
He always reminded me of a flawed d-man like post leg injuries Ekblad. Both are overpayed, and Nurse can skate better at this point, but he doesn't fight as hard in puck battles and, at this point, his coaches don't realize his weaknesses.

"Bottom four d-man"? Let's be honest about it, Nurse is clearly a 2nd pair guy. He's no more a bottom pair defenseman than he is a top pair defenseman.

Nurse likely pulls 6.5 - 7 if he was a free agent this summer. His total salary each year is 8M. Cap hit isn't as big of an issue at this time with the rising cap hit, teams will look at it, but they'll care more about the actual money, and by actual money, he's 1 - 1.5M overpaid. That will affect his value a bit, but it isn't enough to have to dump a 1st just to move him.

By TSN broadcasters, are you meaning Dreger? He hasn't been a real insider for years. Friedman thinks there is interest, and I'd trust his sources a lot more than Dreger's. For as annoying as Friedman can be, he doesn't usually credit his speculation as news, and he's saying there is interest. The real issue is going to be if Nurse's list of teams has a team on it that a) wants him, b) has what the Oilers want and c) can either make an offer that is fair, or swindle Bowman (which has been proven rather easy, so could happen).

Ekholm is 36, Walman isn't very good, and they were both already on the team in addition to Nurse last year.
Ekholm is 36, but he was still good last year. Just a little slower. Time isn't on his side, but unless he falls apart, he's okay in the top 4 for another year.

Walman is fine. He was great 2 years ago in both San Jose and for us. Last year was a rough year because our coaches tried to shoe-horn him into playing RD, and then injuries came into play.

Nurse+Savoie for Graf, no retention. Otherwise the Sharks will simply re-sign Ferraro and possibly look at Trouba

I still believe there are ways this would make sense for the Pens, although of course I’d rather we made a brilliant trade for someone younger and better.

They’ll still try to be competitive next year, don’t really have LD prospects coming that must be prioritized short term, they have lots of cap-room, and in a short while there will be no Letang salary to service and likely Karlsson too. If it means Edm taking Graves as part of it, cap wise it will mean very little for us.

Nurse, IMO, is a good NHL’er in a vacuum. Just terrible value at his salary and usage. Also fair to say that it is not the easiest team in the world to look good on as a D-man.

You aren't getting a useful young top 9 forward to get rid of a burden contract.

Holland doesn’t have enough cap space to engage in a bidding war. LA is not a realistic destination. Unless it starts with the Oilers retaining $3M and taking the incredible Cody Ceci back. Then the Oilers would probably still have to add something. Otherwise, Anaheim has $38M in cap space, he would be GREAT there.
King's have plenty of cap to work with.

Cap could be sent back, Dumoulin, Kuemper, Doughty.

King's are likely not paying a 1C this year so that helps free up cap.

You really think Holland isn't on the phone with Bowman?

Lol. Who the hell is he to demand a trade? That contract is untradable.

i think this is nurse falling on his sword. business lunch conversation. gm says, “hey maybe you request a trade” wouldn’t that be crazy. this is what’s best for everyone. we have to remember mcdavid is the player GM of the team.

nurse is overpaid, but is still a 2nd pairing guy has a history of chipping in offensively. he has 4 years left and can provide some roster stability while they build a new defense. just seems better than the patchwork of leddy/orlov/klingberg or rushing prospects. sharks also have a few other contracts & buyouts expiring with orlov next summer.

they have 40 million in cap, a handful of defenders on elc deals & it might be up to ferraro to stay. ferraro might be a guy that pairs well with nurse.

used graf because he is an rfa and the sharks have been drafting forwards in the first round for 5 years & may be drafting another one 2nd overall. savoie was traded out of a similar situation in buffalo, they had more forward prospects than spots to play them.

sharks already have graf replacement options on elc deals, they have veteran forwards that have been a framework to build around. nurse can be the toffoli/goodrow of the defense rebuild. especially if they keep ferraro.

nurse wouldn't be a burden in san jose, he'd be an upgrade. sharks have 11 forwards signed for next year. they have lund & bystedt in ahl with 1 year of waiver eligibility. they have the #2 pick in the draft. they have more top 40 picks losing eligibility the following 2 seasons.

i don't care if its graf or one the 5 other guys on an elc deal, just being pragmatic by using the guy in a contract year without the waiver pass; the year before the sharks have another 20 million come off the books.

Graf isn't going anywhere. He's the smartest player on the team not named Macklin Celebrini.

okay.

as a sharks fan, do you think nurse would be a good addition to the defense?
He's an upgrade on nothing, but that doesn't mean that I want to spend quality assets on a stopgap. The Sharks aren't trying to force a window open at this point. They can find marginal upgrades for much cheaper and for much less cap space for the time being, until they're able to acquire an actual top pairing.

A mid-round pick and maybe a B-tier prospect I would do, but Graf is near-untouchable to this org.
