I've panned Darnell as much as anyone, but from how he has looked recently I wouldn't be shocked if he had himself a bit of a redemption season.

No doubt he has heard the criticisms of his contract, and knows the pressure that is on this franchise from the cap and how he is viewed by many because of that. He doesn't want to play himself off this team, or become enemy #1 to the fans again, like last playoffs.

Idk, I wouldn't bet on it. But I also wouldn't be surprised to see him go out and get 15g, 50+pts this year, while being a nasty defender. Does that make him worth 9.25? Idk but it's not something I'm gonna complain too much about if thats what we get out of his cap, especially if he can limit his brainfarts and keep it up in the playoffs.
His contract was always going to be a boat anchor for a few years.

Only because of his play. Now that he's playing like this it's no longer a boat anchor. I'm glad that he had the pride to work hard to try and make himself worth his contract vs. throwing his hands up and playing the victim.
You mean when we made it to the Stanley cup final?

It was a boat anchor because of the price and because he didn’t get the first pp unit because ekholm and Bouchard skipped in front of him.

I'm not going down this path again because he's doing well, but prior to this season his play made the contract a boat anchor. Now we are getting full or close to full value from him so I'm just going to keep it positive as long as he keeps playing well.

You do realize 8 year contracts tend to be over valued at the start and can be good deals at the end?

Reaves knocked something back into place when he elbowed Nurse in the face
He was playing good before that (ever since Dermott left his pair). No one just bothered to notice. I feel like Nurse didn't get knocked into sense. The OILER FANS got knocked some sense into their heads after noticing how brutal the defense is when Darnell isn't playing

I think Nurse/Ceci is kind of a chicken/egg scenario. They both were measurably better away from each other.

I think they were just a bad match that drug each other down, don't know if either one was specifically the culprit.

If a player Nurse's age signs an 8 year deal and it is not an over pay at the time he needs to fire his agent. That does not mean that Nurse has earned his contract up until now but people need to realize that comparing 8 year deals in the beginning to legacy contracts is apples to oranges.

My rule is to look at the projected relative cap at the midpoint of the deal. For Nurse that is after the 2025-26 season. It is possible that the cap going into the 26-27 year could be $102M+. If the pandemic had not happened it might be that right now. The way Nurse is playing today at that cap his contract would be very fair. Of course he needs to show that he can keep this up for longer than a couple of months.

If he continued to play like last season he'd never be worth his AAV at any point of his contract unless the cap went up to $200,000,000.
