Darkhorse sleeper picks for 2010 draft

Here is my 2 cents worth on sleepers – sleeper being defined as anyone who should show a major increase from the NHL mid-term listings come draft day. Some will likely show in the NHL final rankings due tomorrow – others (highlighted in red) will not likely show up till draft day for reasons as summarized below.
Bypassed previous drafts – the NHL has an uneven record on rating bypassed players – Hrivik, Gudas, Trotman, Archibald, Ramage
Injuries/illnesses – Cisse, Knight
Higher upsides projected by me than by the NHL – Bissonnette – not enough power or strength to date but is already a point a game guy since the trade to Lewiston and a 6’04’’ guy who can score and who fills out – well, there is a market for that. Vienneau – still in the development stage – has not received the same level of coaching as many of his foes in the draft
Has not done in yet – Granberg – I will wait to see how he does at the U18’s before making any decision on him.
Still gathering info – Kolouch – Don’t have enough info on him to know if I am off base on this one. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I'm confused about the premise of this thread. When i think of sleeper picks, i do not think of Riley Sheahan (who has been ranked top 15 for the past few months), Johansen (who has been typically in the top 20), Nino, Watson or Bjustad. These are very well known guys and thus, not really darkhorses. They are risers, imo. My favorite riser has been Jarnkrok.

Like ikelechien, i like a lot of guys that have been passed over...

Marek Hrivik, Zack Trotman, John Ramage, Darren Archibald, Taylor Carnevale, Adam Polasek, Nate Schmidt, Jonathan Johansen, Fredrik Pettersson-Wentzel, etc...

I am also very high on McKegg.

Others i like in the later rounds are Bournival, Conner Brickley, Jerome Gauthier-Leduc, or Daniel Gunnarsson.

Still gathering info – Kolouch – Don’t have enough info on him to know if I am off base on this one. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Simply said, Kolouch is not NHL material and I can guarantee you that he won´t be drafted.

Has to be my favorite guy in this draft - El Nino.

He has size and skills. He also has something that you can't teach: passion.

Honorable mention: Dylan McIlrath.

I'm not entirely sure on the whole "darkhorse" concept and what it entails but here are a few players that are potential first rounders that I think are going to be steals:

1. Quinton Howden
2. Jaden Schwartz
3. Joey Hishon
4. Tyler Toffoli

Late round(2-7) picks that I think will be steals:

1. Max Gardiner
2. Jordan Weal
3. Kevin Lind
4. Stephen Silas
5. Troy Retkowski
6. Justin Faulk

To move in the first round: Brad Ross

To go higher than expected: Simon Dahl, Adam Polsek, Marek Hrivik, Geoffrey Schemitsch.

NR-EU – SWE – D – Granberg, Petteri – 6’02’’ 202 lb. – Swedish Jrs.- Skellefteå J20 – 40-2-7-9-39

Im very impressed by Granberg and Im impressed you've got him listed. Strong & physical defensively, skates well and knows how to handle the puck. Molded in the Skelleftea school of d-men.

NHL scouts must be impressed too as he the biggest riser among European skaters in the final listings @ 21 except for a Russian @ 16, Vladislav Kartayev (who is unlikely to be drafted because he is Russian and also weighs only 165 lb.)

Same as last year :)
This time overaged. Shortish D Nico Manelius. Damit!

Little explanation why. Game mind and leadership qualities.
Mainly defending D with reasonable offensive qualities (no NHL level). I was totally sold, when in one junior game he shouted to D partner to move meter to left when puck was at opponents end. What do you know. Second later opponents played puck direcly to that position. What would have been open lane turned into easy takeaway.

Manelius is very subpar skater for 5-11 D.

i think adam polasek will be a dark horse ikn this draft the kid is good size speed and not afraid to hit

I'm expecting and I hope that a couple swiss players that got 4th place at the World Juniors will get picked. Guys like Jorg, Geering, Stoop,...

I say Quinton Howden, he is a multi point guy when he has the right guys to play with.

Julian Melchiori- Newmarket.

I haven't seen him play but trust me, this guy is generating talk big time. He's a late 91 DF, heading to UMass-Lowell next year. One scout I talked to said his upside is huge, he's going to be very big when he fills out and he's a freight train (fast and forceful) when carrying the puck. Apparently he's improved hand over fist since the year started and has a legit late 1st round shot- although most HF posters have probably not heard of him.

somehow related to Mike Murphy

Stephen Silas could turn out to be a pretty solid blue liner. Is ranked 60th. when watching Belleville he is their best D man in front of the much hyped Lalonde

Geering is very average skater for his size, I like him a bit but he is not NHL material.
Stoop hasn´t been the same player since his serious shoulder injury a few years ago. I think it was shoulder.
