So, I am listening to Hockey night podcast and Dan says there will be a lot more about his story including what was happening in LA with Darryl Sutter; anybody has any more info.; its a 2 week old podcast.

EDIT: he is talking about Sutter

I could totally see Sutter doing those kinds of things. Explains the very short (but effective) shelf life.

Interesting, well in 2014 they were the most mentally tough team out there, and I now know why. I think everyone knew Sutter was a dick, and I don't agree with everything he did, but clearly watching the compete of some of the veterans on this team, they are a bunch who seems to do better getting their ass kicked by the coach.

Someone posted on social media a practice during the 2012 playoff run of Sutter completely dressing down Kopitar at center ice in front of the team after they had completed some drills. He was just dropping f bombs left and right on him. So I have to agree this group does better with the stick instead of the carrot. That also lend to the belief there has to be some turn over in the roster because all that comes from being a tough coach to play for is at some point animosity.

Man, that's so sad. Sutter really yelled at Kopitar?

Could be some of our players are those who have a hard time motivating themselves without strong sometimes harsh guidance. But also that kind of 24/7 handling could cause burn out. I wouldn't be surprised if a border line hardass coach we're brought back in if we started getting some production. But some players like Brown need a more constructive approach. Not everybody is motivated the same.

Edit: spelling correction

This core has only performed when challenged.

Missing the playoffs in 2015 was flukey but the 2016 regular season was in response to missing the year before. Kopitar rebounds after a horrible season

2017 sees them burned out and complacent after the season prior. Kopitar sucks again.

2018 sees Kopitar and Brown with amazing seasons. Core responds to questions about "are they done" and the firings of DL/Sutter.

2019...the core proved they can still play in 2018. Back to being complacent again. Get another coach fired but they know the new one is just a placeholder so, you know, f*** it.

Kopitar, man. Early in DL's tenure he criticized him for his training habits. He's always been frustrating with his cold spells. All the talent but seems content to just play solid but not impose his will. When he chooses to do so, you get the 2012 and '14 playoffs as well as last season. When he decides to be Perimitar and just circle the offensive zone, you get 2015, '17 and this season.

Love the guy but it is insane how he's doing this every-other-season shit since 2014.

The last four games of the 2014 7-game series against San Jose was probably Kopitar's most dominating and consistent performance. Wonder what Sutter and some of the guys like Williams, Stoll, and Greene were saying in the room.

Anyway, I didn't listen to the whole Carcillio thing. It's not okay for vets in junior hockey to be beating rookies with anything, let alone a sawed off goalie stick.

What he had to say about Sutter isnt a surprise and it isnt that bad - coaches push the limits to keep motivating over a long season. Im not a big fan of DS but those two examples of 'abuse' from Sutter were a joke. The issue of hazing isnt a joke. The thing about calling people out like this, is your accusations better be accurate or it comes across as wallowing and being a victim... which is very popular these days.

11:37 of the OP video is where he talks about Sutter and the Kings for about 2 minutes

I didn’t listen to the rest, so this isn’t an opinion about abuse of players.

The anecdotes about Sutter were kind of funny. Dude was so old school, I don’t think we’ll see his likes again. What I took from the stories was that Sutter was willing to be the lightning rod in that room, when no one else would. That stuff obviously has a shelf life. The whole you don’t get to eat on the plane after a loss is hilarious.

Stevens was probably sneaking them ice cream. Thanks for listening to the whole thing and letting us know where the remarks about Sutter begin.

I listened to a bit more of it. I can believe it wasn't a brotherhood on most of the teams on which Carcillo played.

I guess the bottom line for me with this interview is if you hated your job that much why did you do it for so long? Oh wait, it was for the money. Not every day on the job is great for anyone, but I think professional hockey players probably have it pretty good, so grow the f*** up.

The stuff regarding what was going on in junior hockey with the overly aggressive hazing needs to be looked into and stopped. These guys despite some of them looking like grown men are still kids.

Hard ass coaches are a dying breed because they have very short shelf lives. Strategy is most important since everyone gets used to the barking.

Sutter was good for a short stint cause he was An ass.

Keep in mind the same stuff doesn't work the same way on everyone, and stuff that operates on negative emotions (fear, shame, resentment) may be effective in the short term but is definitely going wear players out in the long term. I know a lot of people want the players beaten up figuratively (and for some posters, literally) because we don't like the results, but I think we are taking some wild-ass guesses from the outside about player motivation. Pining for a hard-ass to blast the players seems more about our catharsis and venting our spleen sometimes than it does for realistically improving the team's performance.

Different coaches have different methods, and I would bet most here who have played competitive sports on any level have experienced a hard-ass or two. Look at the contrast on the Kings staff in 2012. You had Sutter, Stevens and Kompon. I think the players were getting plenty of TLC from Stevens.

Hopefully, the Kings will soon being moving into a phase where a a coach with a teaching style like Terry Murray will be more appropriate. There was a reason he was brought in and Crawford, who was definitely a coach who would peal the paint off the walls, was let go after one season.

Stevens had a pretty short shelf life. It's not always about the X's and O's. I think Lombardi felt the players had abused the trust of Terry Murray, so he brought in Sutter. It turned out being held accountable is exactly what that team needed.

Yeah, if we're going towards youth, we need a teaching coach like Murray, not an Old Yeller.

OMG HORRIBLE! Sutter took away airplane food from us after losses and he was a meanie!
