During the game on his Twitter account Damien Cox said it was the wrong call giving Edmonton a penalty shot because he said Mikko Lehtonen did not actually close his hand on the puck in the crease. I know the refs were reviewing the play and neither Chris Cuthbert or Louie DeBrusk said it was the wrong call, so was Cox right or was he wrong?

I don't know about the rule but it looked like a penalty in real-time. Can't blame the ref for that one.

That non-call on Mikheyev was a disgrace though.
When you watch the replay in real time we can see Lehtonen immediately put the puck under Andersen because it happened very fast. So even though you can say his hand was directly on the puck while he was in the crease for that split second, it wasn't covered up like when we see Andersen or any other Goalie do that to get a whistle.

If you didn't post this thread I would've never known Cox was still around. Ummm, why exactly should we care what he says?

Let's kindly put him in the "rarely ever hear from again" box with Bill Watters, Glen Healy Doug MacLean, along a few others ... and hoping Steve Simmons gets added to that pile of steamy, stinky crap

Damn straight. If you are a Leaf fan you have Cox, and Simmons on block. Just terrible "reporting".

Wrong call. Typical with the reffing so far this year.

Couple that with the ridiculous no call on Mikheyev, and it's time for Keefe/Shanahan to take a fine.

I think he did close his hand on the puck. At first I questioned it but I thought the replay showed his glove on top of the puck.

I mean, it's a pretty easy call - Lehtonen had his hand on top of the puck on in the crease. It was a panic move and an easy mistake to make under duress, but it's an easy cut and dry no-no.

If you really want something to gripe about, Mikheyev getting spun to the ice by Nurse would be the one. Yeah, we got a nice makeup call a few minutes later when Yamamoto got tagged for a pretty weak hold, but those are stupid as well and should not be a thing.

Just because the guy isn't the lead on a National broadcast anymore does that mean we should gang mentality ignore anything he says.
