Those of you who follow basketball tell me do the NBA-players go to the olympics? I know they did in 1992 when there was the dream-team but have they done so regularly ever since?

If they don't is there a lot of complaints that they should?

Not comparable to hockey, I know, as there is no competition in basketball as the Americans are so overwhelmingly dominant.

They do, though a lot of players for USA at least skipped the last tournament. There is a competitiveness issue in international basketball where USA is far, far better than any other country is at the sport. Somewhat akin to Canada in the early decades of Olympic play where people in Canada didn't particularly care about the best going since far inferior players could still win.

Funny that you mention that, because i asked the ZDF and ARD if they could send more hockey because they now have more money freed up because of the Cl rights.
Both answered 2-3h later that day and the ARD said that the IIhF world cup had about 170.000 viewers about 0,8%. So there is no real a thing for that. But they want to show like the big events (olympics or the finals of the World cup [if they can get the rights]) but they don't have time to send the plyoff finals of the DEL live, because they a) lack the rights (even though they are cheap as ****) and b) in the Sportsschau (like sport center) we only have 30 minutes for other sport. And on saturday you have 1,5h for football. So you see there are other preferences here. But if the Nhl would manage to let the ZDF or ARD send out some weekday or saturday games for a little bit of money or even the stanley cup final, something could grow.

There's so much competition for those minutes, hockey would first have to get past sports like handball and basketball to be in the position. And to get past it would need the coverage, so really there's no way.

Like it or not but the 2016 World Cup of Hockey featured the very best teams of the major hockey playing countries Russia, USA, Canada, Sweden, Czech Republic and Finland iced their best possible rosters. It was very much a best vs best tournament and it will be remembered that way. The only people who won't remember it that way are just bitter and try to downplay it because their country didn't win. If anything it was more of a true representation of the true champion because teams like North America and Europe are easily better teams than anything the Slovakians, Swiss/Germans would have iced. So in terms of quality hockey teams, 2016 WCOH was a premier best vs best event.

Does anyone in their right mind hold the 2018 Olympic final between OAR - Germany as a better representation of who is the best hockey team in the world? give me a break.

Im not even sure 1% of the population in Sweden knew it was a tournament going on. The media didnt talk about it, people didnt talk about and not even my close friends (which at least half of them have played in the SHL/Allsvenskan) was excited or talked about it much. I didnt even see all the games.

Sweden didnt care one bit about that shitty gimmick tournament.

And Russia didnt get to use Voynov, Canada/USA didnt have any younglings playing like Matthews, Mcdavid or Mackinnon.

Tough to talk about a tourney I had almost forgotten about. I know its things that made the games even worse, but I have just forgotten about it.

The 2016 World Cup had far superior hockey to the borefest of the 2014 Olympics. I think a big problem is having games like Czech Republic vs Nowheristan and there's 40 people in the stands watching. That doesn't really scream major tournament to anyone.

Ideally it'd be an NHL/NHLPA tournament (so the IOC doesn't get a say), and an invitational tournament with only 6 teams. Maybe make a qualifying for the 6th spot or something. But it's important to have less teams and none of this group stage nonsense. Group stage format denies us of classic matchups. It needs to be a round robin where every team plays every other team. An international tournament with the best players is a rare feat, and it makes no sense to skip any of the matchups between top teams.

The group stage needs to have importance, so no "everybody makes the playoffs" either. 6 teams round robin, top 2 teams play for the championship. That's it. Very simple. Great hockey. We've had that format in the past in Canada Cups. Make it so, Bill Daly.

I think 8 teams is fine, there's enough competitive hockey out there if the best players in the world are all available. The top six nations are obvious, and two of Switzerland, Slovakia or Germany would make for decent hockey. Do it right this time and maybe there wouldn't be so much backlash and fan apathy.

Yep yep utter bollocks.. dont see them getting into 2022 olympics either... will be old next time getto see best on best hockey

It's disappointing. A World Cup of Hockey properly done would be wonderful.

I still strongly believe we will get the Olympics in 2022

I hope so but I’m extremely skeptical
I still believe it would be unbelievably stupid of them not to.

Mainly because I think relations between the NHL and China are almost entirely contingent on the Olympics. The Chinese government picks winners and losers, there is simply no way around it. Much larger corporations than the NHL have gambled with China's graces and lost. I perceive Bettman to be a smart man, but he is an absolute fool if he thinks he has any shot breaking into the chinese market while also spiting a project the chinese government will spend billions on.

There is a difference between having guts and being stupid. Taking on both the Chinese government and the NHLPA isn't brave. It's stupid. Bettman will try to get the best he can for the owners in the next CBA discussion, so he will continue to play the "we may or we may not, who knows" game in terms of public statements. But I'll put it this way.

He calls the Olympics "incredibly disruptive." The extent to which the Olympics are "incredibly disruptive" cannot compare even in part to how incredibly disruptive the Chinese government can be if it wants to be.

It all comes to player testing. NHL/NHLPA do not want their players tested by the WADA.

WADA has way longer list of illegal substances what NHL does,
what are legal to use in the NHL are not legal to use elsewhere.

No World Cup? Best hockey related news of the decade so far, glad that joke of a tournament is dead.

Here's to hoping that NHL will join the Olympics, at leasy we have a better change for that to happen now.
