Confirmed with Link: Dalton Smith and JAM traded to TB for Matt Taormina and Dana Tyrell

It's a longshot for any player drafted after the 2nd round to make the NHL. At least 7 of the 8 will likely play professional hockey (only Archibald hasn't so far. Oullette likely will sign somewhere out of college). Brandon Archibald's hockey career was cut short by injuries, so it's unfair to call him a bad pick.

At least, it looks like nearly all were reasonable picks. Straka wasn't signed but will likely end up playing in the NHL, Corbeil had a steller QMJHL career, Oullette went from being a very questionable pick to having a fantastic junior and senior seasons at Maine.

Madaisky is having trouble cracking the Springfield line up after battling injuries. He still could be a decent prospect for the Jackets and depending on what happens with Golo, Erixon, Savard and Prout next season, he could be the defensive depth. And Madaisky has played more games for Springfield this season than Evansville.

Not signing Straka seems like the only mistake.

Straka has as many points as Patrick McNeill and Frederic St.Denis, while you can't even compare his points production to Tim Erixon. And all those aforementioned guys are defensemen for the Falcons. I don't see how not signing Straka is a mistake.

We had Shelley, then Boll who was Shelley with more skill, Dorse who was Boll with more skill, then back to Boll, then thought it would be Smith...

I guess next will be Josh Anderson in a couple years

In that 2010 draft, it appears we will only get two players out of it, Johansen and Prout. Four of our picks were unsigned/traded (Smith(2nd), Straka(2nd), Corbeil (4th), and Archibald(5th). Prout was a 6th, and the only other guy in that class is Austin Madaisky, an ECHL defenseman and Martin Oullette, who is unsigned right now and given our goalie depth, probably won't be signed. Yikes

Don't be so quick. Madaisky has started to acclimate to the AHL after a tough injury year last year. Size, decent skater... Oullette has played better every year at Maine and the Black Bears are average at best. Oullette has made them a better team with a chance for the tourney. He's lights out better than Corbiel (Remember...the guy so many were pissed we didn't sign because of his gaudy numbers on the best team in the CHL? ). Oullette could be signed for help in Evansville. We don't have a lot of signed depth and need to develop goaltending at all levels.

Oh yeah, I'm OK with this trade. (on topic)

Tynan won't get signed. He's regressed every year since he's been drafted. Literally, he's de-improving.

Hey guys, Tampa fan here.
I wnat to ask how Tyrell has looked for you guys so far? Do you think he will get a chance in the NHL next year?
He was always on the cusp in Tampa, but was never good enough to really make it and with all the young guys he would have never got another chance.

I love this trade just for getting Dalton Smith, he is our only forward with enforcer abilities and has only one guy in front of him for a callup. That guy is Cedric Paquette who is outgrowing his 4th line ceiling pretty fast and might force himself into the lineup next october.
That said I feel kinda bad for JAM, he said in an interview that he wasn't happy in Columbus anymore and wanted out and now his way to the NHL didn't get any easier with him battleing with Gourde and Kunyk for the 2nd callup spot.

Anyways how happy or not happy are you Columbus fans with the trade?

i think its one that may end up working in the long run for both teams...i was a fan of Smith...hated letting him go, but sounds like folks in springfield liked Tyrell...i think folks on this board are up in the air whether we resign him...but I think he gets a shot...

Wouldn't make sense to let him go IMO, I mean he is still only 25 and at worst he is a ver serviceable AHL guy.
Any rumor wether Taormina will remain in the organization or not?

Kinda curious where the hell JAM thought he fit on the big club or what he had done to even earn a sniff of big ice. This guy was one of my least favorite players in our system and I couldn't be happier that he's someone else's problem.

Huh? JAM has no chance of being an NHL player.

I view the trade as just a swap on minor league scrubs that will never have an impact on either team's NHL roster.

Very short-sighted assessment.

Dalton Smith still has plenty of potential - albeit towards a limited role. Dana Tyrell is a guy that needed a change of scenery, and could still develop into an NHL player at some point. Think Derek MacKenzie.

As for Taormina and Audy-Marchessault, they were the minor league swap. Springfield needed a veteran D, and Tampa needed to replace the output of Tyrell on their AHL affiliate. It's a good swap for both teams - the CBJ add depth that can help them immediately, as well as scoring and leadership at the AHL level.
