Rumor: Dallas Stars have approached Wyatt Johnston's camp with an 8-year contract offer that would pay him slightly over 8M per season.

He should only take a short-term bridge if it's as low as $8M. A player like he is will be worth over $10M pretty soon in "new Cap" dollars.

Sounds like where you start in negotiations.

Johnston, after a slow start like Robertson, where he was completely snake-bitten by low shooting percentage, has been an absolute unit since the turn of the year along with his teammate:

Oh yeah, he also is one of the team's top PKers.

One of the brightest young star forwards in the game. He should cost way more than "a little over 8"...even if the cap weren't going up.

No chance I'm taking that if I am Wyatt Johnston.

With the way the cap is projected to go, I'm not signing an 8 year deal straight out of my ELC for less than $10M in his shoes.
Yup.

As a Flyers fan, I'd easily offersheet him $11.4 now. Never mind that that number will go up to probably $12-$13M and I'd still do it short of 4 1st rounders.

I get $8M is a starting point, but you go to that hoping that they come back with $9M or $9.5M and you meet in the middle. But Johnston is going to get way more than that.

5yr at 8M maybe...add 3 more years with the cap being almost 30M higher will take a git more AAV from Dallas

Anything under $9.5m is a steal for him. If this offer is true it's definitely low

But like someone else mentioned, this seems like a early negotiations type offer

Wish I could find the thread on the main boards where I was laughed at for saying Wyatt would be a star coming out of Windsor.

Suzuki was 23 when his current deal started. It came in at 8.9% of the salary cap. The same percentage would be $8.5million next year - IF the cap wasn't expected to continue to climb annually. New cap reality is going to throw things in a blender. $10m per is the likely number.

Sounds like Nill wants to get this done before the deadline so he has a better idea of next years cap. Meaning he can then make a trade for someone with term

Guess if we see this done before Friday then we can expect Dallas to make a trade for a Dman with term

You forget the Texas income tax factor.

Most Stars fans (including myself) were pissed when his name was called at the draft. Lots of comments saying we reached and he would be a third line guy 😂
