I don't know, I didn't think any of the goals he gave up against Chicago were weak? A couple were pretty ugly deflections.

If he gives up multiple five hole goals it’s going to look bad. It’s the new glove high already. Ofcourse he gave up one of those too so you see where the problem is.

Also, Cam being the #1 is not the answer. Stop that. Maybe Darling just isn’t that undisputed #1 they had hoped at this very minute. It’s kind of silly to expect him to immediately be that guy after playing no more than 25 games the last 3 years. Maybe instead of the 60 games Darling is on pace to start, it should drop down to between 50-55. I think I’ve advocated for this before, or I’ve thought it in my head. Either way, Darling doesn’t look like he’s ready for that Hotlby/Price workload just yet.

I thinks this is the right attitude to take. Cam Talbot didn't start out his first year with the Oilers on fire...he was pedestrian at the beginning like Darling has been. Fortunately, we do have Ward playing well in relief, so we don't have to over work Darling if he is struggling.

I think this years goaltending has been a notable step up from last year, and Darling has been a pretty big improvement on either of those two last year. He makes a ton of saves I think Ward would let in.

Saad walking in all by his onesies with all that 3v3 space has any goalie dead to rights, I didn't mind that one at all. He's a shooter and Aho got caught up watching behind Hanifin there. The five hole from the point looked deflected and through multiple screens. Debrincats top cheese ramped off both Slavin and TVR, and his first one was a pass from Toews that was perfection. Ain't nobody gonna stop that. I know it's four goals but I think it's four that go in on anyone. The last one is where you hope he comes up big, but it wasn't a bad goal. It's a breakaway. You always forget all the saves he made up to that point.

Being 6'6" he's gonna give up some five holes, surprised he doesn't give more up.

If he gave up more he’d have a save % below .900 :sarcasm:

In all seriousness though, it’s very similar to Cam of the past 2 years. Just not getting that 1 big save to seal the win. They signed Darling to be the difference maker, and while he’s been better than the Ward/Lack combo, that’s not exactly a high bar. It’s not like I’m writing him off either. At his current pace he’s going to hit his career high in starts before Christmas. It’s a huge adjustment, aside from the change in teams/homes, etc.

For me Darling has been significantly better than any goaltending the Canes have received in years.

A staple of the Cam Ward era was giving up a back-breaking goal and the wind being completely sucked out of the game. Near guaranteed losses. It just hasn't happened with Darling. Being competitive and losing sucks, but at least they have been consistently competitive. Darling hasn't been stellar but it feels like those big saves he makes after giving up goals are going unappreciated.

Well coming into this game Carolina finds itself in an all too familiar position 8th in the Metro (that's dead last) and once more in 13th in the East.

Canes need points, they just squandered one the other night so they need to get as many as possible from tonight's game. We can't have a flat period like the latter part of the third the other night so go out and beat up on Dallas.

Go Canes!

Now that I'm finally in town for a home game, I'll be going, with the family in tow. Anybody know which section they seat military rush in the upper deck?

Is the Caniac coach still running this year?

Military rush seats are wherever they can put you, to my knowledge. All seats in the upper bowl are $15 once doors open. And yes, the Caniac Coach is still running.

Military Rush
Military Rush returns for the 2017-18 season, allowing military personnel the opportunity to purchase deeply discounted day-of-game tickets. Any remaining inventory will go on sale at PNC Arena's box office beginning when doors open. At that time, all available upper-level tickets will cost $15 and lower-level tickets in select areas at limited capacity will cost $35.
To take advantage of the Military Rush program, personnel must show a valid military identification card at the box office window and immediately enter PNC Arena after purchasing their ticket. There is a purchase limit of two tickets per ID.

Day of game only, based on availability

Not that I doubt there'll be availability, but if you want more certainty you could opt for the Military Appreciation Program instead

Military Appreciation Program
Fans presenting a valid military ID at PNC Arena's box office for any home game will receive $35 off any lower-level seat and $15 off any upper-level seat (Fan Zone excluded). This discount will continue to be available through day of game and is subject to box office pricing. Please call Brian Kapusta at 919-861-5452 for groups of 10 or more.

I usually only get lower bowl seating, and they always stuck us in the same place- Section 120 XX and X. I figured maybe they did the same for upper level.

I miss the first couple of years of the rush program, where you could talk them into snagging seats closer to the ice. I manged to get row B a couple of times for $35 bucks. Good times.

Ward through 11 starts last year:
4-4-3 /2.51 GAA/ .908 SV%

Darling through 11 starts this year:
4-3-4 /2.49 GAA/.906 SV%

Again I said the combo has been better and Darling has been marginally better than Ward. The stats say they’ve been pretty even through this stretch last year. The significant upgrade is from Lack to Cam.

This is about right. Darling has been OK...but he has not been a "big improvement" over Ward as the starter. They are very similar in overall performance, each having their own strengths and weak points. Both Darling's SV% and team outcome with him in net vs. Ward as the starter from last season are nearly identical.

Now Darling+Ward is a definite step up over Ward+Lack, but the big improvement is the quality starts you get from Ward as the backup over what they got from Lack.

Giving more starts to Darling still makes sense. The reduced work load from Ward seems to be working well...and the team has 3 more seasons with Darling after this one so they'd like to see him settle in and succeed.

How do you split their starts for the rest of the season to optimize overall performance in net. Maybe ratchet Ward's % up a bit as suggested above.

I haven't given up on Darling long term. But with the goal of making the playoffs this season, I kind of like the idea of moving to merit based goal-tending if the two don't converge soon.

If that means 40-40 or 30-50 or 55-35 for Darling, then so be it as long as they are trying to make the playoffs.

4/27 and 5/57 D pairings are officially A Thing

I think the D pairings make sense as-is, to the point that changes would be counter productive.

Frankly the forward lines are trivial at this point. Other than the standard Skinner-Ryan pairing, there’s no real chemistry between any two of those guys and nothing to be lost by mix-and-matching them. That won’t change until we add a noteworthy talent.

I understand why the number of starts is skewed toward Darling, but it would have been interesting to acclimate both the former starter out of starting 3 out of 4 and the former backup out of starting 1 out of 4. All of us would've pitched an ever-loving fit at that news, though.

The standard Skinner-Ryan pairing is dead. Now he’s the 2C with Brock McGinn. A nice $6 million 2nd line backed up by a $13 million 3rd line.
