Confirmed Trade: [DAL/SJS] Mikael Granlund, Cody Ceci for 2025 1st, conditional 2025 4th

Seriousöy, what a series of dumb trades by Grier. First trade young promising D Emberson for vet D Ceci. And then trades Ceci and good top6 forward Granlund for a 1st. A 1st doesnt garantee anything at all.
Granlund was a good foundation for amaking a good culture
ofc, there could be that he doesnt want to be a part of a tank.a 1st is A magic bean, and there are just a handful 1sts that blossom into a legit top6 player.
Basicly a young good D Emberson + Granlund for a 1st, and a player 2 years away from making impact. Well....

Disagree. Grier has done great job as a GM. The Sharks are in a good position in their rebuild.

How silly to trade a waiver pickup and a depressed asset (at acquisition) for a 1st.

What kind of value management is this?

I'm underselling the many nuances of the deals for brevity sake but the end results so far have been more than satisfactory for the Sharks.

I fail to see your points. The Sharks won’t be in a position to make a run for the playoffs for 2-3 years so Granlund didn’t really fit their window. Emberson was not very good for the Sharks and has been replaced by Thompson who, to the eye, looks better.

We still have Ruuta and Goodrow who are SC winners to influence the culture.

Very likely Granlund, who was a cap dump in the EK65 trade, didn’t want to spend his final years in the NHL as part of a rebuild. Really good on Grier to get a 1st and 3rd/4th for him and Ceci.

Might also help the Sharks sign UFA’s in the future if they see demonstrated evidence that Grier is willing to move them to cup contenders if the Sharks aren’t that.

These trades also help cement a spot very near the top of a draft that is reputedly weak beyond the first 4-5 picks.

Granlund is a pending UFA who was very unlikely to re-sign with the Sharks. He's already 32 and will probably try to find a spot in a contender. He was part of the return/cap dump for Karlsson and after being a good contributor he's now a late 1st rounder for the Sharks.

Grier is being the opposite of dumb. He took a player that was underperforming as part of the Karlsson cap dumb, who then became a valuable contributor, then shipped him before his contract expired and now Grier has yet another good future asset.

The Sharks should absolutely not be retaining aging veterans for the long haul. Until their young guns can start pushing the team into the playoffs, they should be bringing in players who are still fighting to improve their game or at least keeping themselves from declining. The Sharks would've needed to give Granlund a retirement contract for him to stay and he absolutely would not have the impact he had earlier with a deal taking him to his late 30's on a team still years from Cup contention.

See how the Hawks still suck so much - overloading the roster with mediocre 30 y/os and declining veterans on multiyear deals who wouldn't have gotten a better deal anywhere else. You want to bring in people who want to compete with the young stars and push them to do better, not just be voices of wisdom who know they aren't fighting for shit and are looking forward to an early vacation while the young stars' development stall.

They can retain aging vets if it fills a vacant position their developing players aren't filling. Granlund did a wonderful job of that in his two seasons here. We weren't expecting anything out of him when the trade was made and now we have an asset that can either improve our prospect pool or get us an NHL player we need with the young players. Moving Granlund is also much easier when you expect Will Smith to be a 2C in the near future.

That pick is either going to improve their already impressive prospect pool or go towards filling out the roster to help make guys like Celebrini and Smith better. They need a pretty massive overhaul of their blue line and the Sharks tend to need to trade for those players rather than sign them from free agency.
