Stars may have slightly overpaid in draft capital but it is necessary to acquire depth before other teams make a move.

Granlund was loathed in Pittsburgh and Ceci was dumped by Edmonton but both players are useful in a middle 6 and bottom pairing roles.

So uh, Dallas, the only contender with heaps of cap space (because of Seguin's LTIR), choose to burn it on Granlund and Ceci. Umm....wut.

Their biggest hole is a top-four defensemen - even moreso with Heiskanen potentially out until the playoffs. Cody Ceci ain't fixing that.

A 1st for Granlund? IMO an overpayment, but not egregious. But they took on both at full cap freight. Just bewildering.

Still plenty of space left for other moves. And depending on Heiskanen's evaluation Monday, they may put him on LTIR too.

Plenty of space, bigger question will be whether or not they have the assets to get it done though

First off, Granlund is on pace for 71 points. I think a 1st is fair. Secondly, pick will likely be 28th-32nd and this draft is apparently a weak one. Stars didn’t lose any of their young players so it’s a win for them.

I do expect them to make another move. But the 1st was one of their main bullets, and they burned a lot of their available cap space. Ceci can't play above a 3rd pair for a contender, so I don't think he really helps their blueline much.

I'm not really critical of the Granlund piece of the deal. But you're not taking into account that he will not produce like that in Dallas. He won't be getting 1st line minutes or be on the 1PP, so valuing him at that production level is a small mistake.

My main criticism is that Nill burned most of his available cap space and one of his main trade bullets (the 1st) and didn't really address the blueline at all. Ceci ain't solving anything there.

When Miro is back, Ceci will surely be in the bottom pair, or a healthy scratch depending what the Stars do before the TDL.

Ceci was acquired mainly so we don’t have to play an AHL d man while Miro is out.

As for Granlund, we shall wait and see how he performs. I believe he has good chemistry with Duchene back in Nashville.

Lundqvist just had season ending surgery and that leaves them with the reputation of Matt Dumba, Ilya Lyubushkin and Christian Kyrou as their RD. They needed someone and Ceci is better than any of those three.

Again, I think the Granlund part of the deal is fine.

Sure, when everyone is healthy, Ceci will be on third pair. But Boosh will still be in the top-four. Seeing him in the playoffs before...he is not really able to handle the playoff pace in that kind of leverage.

Sure. I'm just saying Nill burned some of his primary assets (1st + big chunk of cap space) and didn't solve the hole in the top-four.

Bosh has been just fine and actually impressive this season. I don’t see him regressing but you never know. Hopefully Nill has some more tricks up his sleeve before the deadline.

There doesn't seem to be alot of RHD that are top 4 available to be fair. Lots of teams are in the wild card race this year.

Dallas was also rumored to be very interested in Andersson, but obviously no chance Calgary is moving him now.

Nill said he wanted to get a deal done now before there's not much available and the prices go up.

Granlund sucked with the penguins in a reduced role, does the same happen here?
Other posts have stated that if he’s not in a top-6 role (on a scoring line) he’ll not perform well.

Thing is with the Stars that once Marchment is back our 3rd line is also a scoring line; even our 4th can chip in some decent offense if Dadonov is on it.

Trade works for both.

People will make up a million reasons why not, but producing at almost ppg over couple seasons is elite. This is the level where players are able to start negotiating from a perspective of term, something I’m sure SJ doesn’t want to commit to yet. Need to plan for future raises and avoid use of a buyout slot. Granlund essentially priced himself out of SJ
