Dadonov seems like the kind of player who could thrive on an expansion team and he could be a pretty good contributor on the Kraken's top-2 line next year.

At $5M he's too expansive for Vegas but Seattle could take him on for one more season.

I think if Vegas gives Seattle a draft pick or a solid young player the deal could be made and Vegas saves $5M.

Win-win. What do you think?

Would depend what the asset going the other way is. Seattle valued cap space and were planning to weaponize it, I’m not sure spending 5m of it for a second round pick or something outweighs the players they chose to keep off their draft list for cap space.

Seattle:
Dadanov
Brossoit
2nd

Vegas:
Driedger
Jarnkrok (50%)

Vegas isn't paying a 2nd to clear ~2.5m in cap. IF they're paying a 2nd they're going to get the full Dadanov hit off the books. Likely in the offseason because then he'll only have 1 year left. They definitely aren't taking Driedger on when they have Lehner and Thompson locked in for 3 years. Thompson is probably the back up next year.

Well, Lehner can't be trusted in net. This might also be a good test for Driedger to see if he is legit. Because personally I think Driedger is too good for a back-up but not good enough to be a starter. But I think he'd be a better option than Lehner. I was even considering Lehner to Seattle, but the other thing I put into accountability is he has a NTC.

Lehner's been just fine. The only question with him is his health. That's why Vegas has been rumored to have interest in goalies with expiring contracts. They could use insurance in net for this season. They can't afford another 3.5m in net after this year in addition to Lehner.

Seattle could always grab Dadonov and a pick from Vegas (In exchange for future considerations or a 7th round pick or something like that). His contract runs out in '23 so they could flip him at the '23 trade deadline for a second pick. Win/win.

Well Seattle hasn't weaponized anything yet so getting a 2nd round pick and a top-6 player, who's only signed for one more year, seems good to me. Plus, if Dadonov has a solid season next year, he can be retained and dealt for another 2nd round pick.

Just doing that would actually accomplish more than whatever the hell Francis has done since the expansion draft (which is literally nothing)

Except they never weaponized anything, didn't get assets at the expansion draft OR end up with good players. It's nice to say you want to be a hard bargainer and hold cap teams' feet to the fire... but they really didn't do anything to either build their team up in the present OR get futures. Trade 7th for Dadonov, get some value out of his play next year on a team that needs offense, and then trade him next year at the deadline when his contract is easily movable.

Waiting for the perfect deal instead of doing a good deal is a bad strategy.

Jarnkrok is a UFA so you are clearing the full cap hit of $5M for Dadanov for next year.

In what world is Dadonov still a 2nd line winger in the NHL?

The guy has been bad for two seasons in a row(even on a stacked Vegas team) and is a pure cap dump, especially for a cap strapped team like Vegas.
He also has another year at $5M left on his contract and that money could be used in free agency or trades(Francis has said he wants to be aggressive) to try and bring in an upgrade.

Overall I've got no interest in Dadonov given his play as he'd most likely be another top 9 forward with scoring troubles which we already have enough of.

He could still be a worthy 2nd line player if given the opportunity. That's why I said in my opening post that Dadonov could thrive on an expansion team... I know he hasn't been good for 2 years, but players can bounce back with a change of scenary. Look at his stats from 3-4-5 years ago

Also you are getting a 2nd round pick thrown in by Vegas, which is very valuable. If you're signing free agents, you're not getting 2nd round picks.

And Dadonov can be shipped out for assets next year

Well, grab the first 2nd or 3rd round (or whatever) pick now, grit your teeth until the '23 trade deadline and flip him for another pick. Oh, and Hakstol will have to find a way to make him look like a new player.

So no pressure.

Do you really think a late 2nd or 3rd round pick are worth taking on a guy with a $5M cap hit that hasn't really produced since signing that deal in 2020?

I don't think so and would rather look to find an overpaid guy(a team needs to get rid off) who at least produces somewhere near his cap hit, while also bringing along a draft pick.

While taking on a 3.5m backup goalie. That's the key part that makes this not work for Vegas. Their goaltending for the next few years is already set with Lehner-Thompson.

Again, Dadonov has not been good for two years straight(not even with a very good Vegas team) and looking further back doesn't make too much sense.

I mean, can we get a first and more for Giordano because he won the Norris three years ago?
Probably not because he's not playing at that level anymore.

We also have McCann, Schwartz and Eberle already and can use those $5M to try and aquire another player for our top six.

On top of that, a 2nd rounder by Vegas will be around the #50 range and those statistically speaking aren't all that likely to even make the NHL.
So it's not that vaulable, especially by taking on a $5M cap hit during a time when cap space is still very important and hard to come by for teams like Vegas.

Dadonov is 33. When players like him fall off at that age they almost never bounce back.

Dadonov is not really a reclamation project at this point of his career. While I wouldn't say he's a cap dump per se he also doesn't hold too much value. He doesnt fit age wise with any rebuilding team or in Seattles case a building team. So he needs to be packaged with prospects/draft picks in that case for a return Vegas needs.

Yes - because he can be flipped for a second pick at the '23 deadline.

Vegas could buy out Dadonov and it only costs them 600k next season and 2.1m the season after.

That's fine, next season is when they need the money for RFAs.

The cap would go up another million and Vegas has young players, Morozov and Brisson up front and Cormier, Korczak and Chayka on the back end, that they could look for a cheap contract that next year to save the remainder. And Pacioretty and Patrick both come off the books for 8.2 million at that point.

If someone wants a 3rd round pick to take Dadonov and flip him for more later that's fine, it saves Vegas the annoyance, but Vegas isn't in a desperate situation to find a partner.

Dadonov is scoring at the same rate as Donato and less than Johansson and Blackwell. Seattle could probably sign all 3 for the 5M in cap that Dadonov takes up. Dadonov also males 6.5M in cash, so teams that may want to take him for his cap might not because of the extra cash he is owed without it being worth their while. And I can't see how Dadonov can get a 2nd at the deadline next year with how he's played the past few seasons. He'll be lucky to get a 3rd with 50% retention.
