D Tom Willander - Boston University, NCAA (2023, 11th, VAN)

It’s four years of draft rights, the player becomes a UFA if unsigned after those four years.

If the player signs a NHL contract then draft rights no longer apply and the player will become either a RFA or UFA when that first NHL contract ends.
To add to this, when player like potentially Willander becomes UFA after 4 years unsigned, they still sign ELC, they just get chance to pick where.

“College hockey is sick. It’s a lot of fun. You’re all the same age and living with each other, just you and the boys having fun every day of the week. It’s a good league, but you can still feel that it isn’t pro yet.”

That sounds like a player that looks at the NCAA as part of his past, not his future. Does he believe he has outgrown what college hockey can provide moving forward?

“Yeah, I do," Willander said. "A little bit, anyway. I don’t think I’m in any way too good for the league. But thinking about optimizing development, I don’t know if that’s what I need. It might not be the perfect spot for me anymore.”

Sounds like Willander is done with NCAA and Boston University. I still think he signs his ELC before next year, whether with VAN or somebody else.

I can't see the Ducks moving Zegras for a dman. We may decide to retool his roster spot for a power forward or a sniper, but we need a forward upgrade if Zegras gets traded as part of a package.
I don't disagree but a Zegras trade would be part of that retooling involving several moves. Getting a solid near ready RD prospect would be an acceptable return for Zegras IMO. I understand it's a close call though.

This guy just comes off as a really bright, level-headed kid. Good head on his shoulders, not a lot of 20 year old boys have the patience and even temper to talk about this stuff rationally.
He is really mature. Jumping from SHL direct to NCAA as a D also takes guts and belief in himself. He basically aced his pre draft interview and impressed everyone.

Think Landeskog.

I really don't want to let this guy go, but with the sudden glut of quality D prospects in the system and a trigger happy JR, I can see he is the carrot they are dangling for the established 2C they need to keep Hughes in town.
