I remember a lot of people HATED this pick, saying he was a 3rd/4th rounder picked too early. Right now Antti leads the Jr. SM-liiga in shots and average time on the ice. If he scores 13 points in the next 7 games he will break the league's all time scoring record for defenders.

Let's go Antti!

Putting up numbers in that league (at 19) does not validate anything just yet.

Where am I stating that? Just wanted to share this fact.

Most people are going to assume those two sentences are related.
Nobody is going to read that as, "A lot of people thought he was a 3rd/4th rounder, but now he is breaking records... so those people should still consider him a 3rd/4th rounder..."

He's still a good amount away before we can really read into anything as him as a prospect, and based on his willingness to stay in a lower league in order to go to college, we are a LONG way away before he has any potential impact on the wings

Is it bad to dominate a junior league as a defenseman? I've seen U20 Liiga as comprable to the USHL. 15 goals and 44 points in 42 games is impressive.

Well, the simple reason for that is, very few high-end 19-year-olds play in the league at all. They'll move to Mestis or Liiga significantly younger. The only players who tend to stay there for so long are ones who only have Liiga potential.

Tough to say what this season really means. Obviously he was the best player in the league, but not one he should have been in.

Everyone should be reserving judgment until next year.

Yeah, I don't think you can be upset or excited about the season as it really does not tell us a whole lot. His biggest issue as a propsect is his feet. Improvement to his skating is far more important than statistical production at this point.

So, what do you guys think? Does he have a shot to take a top 4 role in the WJC´s this year?

I'm surprised at the numbers. I know his previous numbers were in Junior A but they were still so impressive that I figured he'd be more of a dynamo right away for Denver. Any thoughts?

NCAA a bit of a step up from U20 Liiga but his production so far is solid for a guy who just turned 20 a few weeks ago. Needed a little time to settle in to new country, new team and school routine, smaller ice surface, etc but looking more like a future top 4 NHL D lately imo. Makar, as an example, was only a .6 PPG player his freshman year. Not to suggest Tuomisto has Makar's offensive upside but NCAA isn't a cakewalk for majority of talented freshman

Hes leading his team in defensive scoring as a freshman and is one point out of third place on the entire team. I would say thats pretty solid for a guy that just came over to North America and with very little experience in the NCAA/a very weird start to the year

It seems like his production is picking up even more now as well. I'm more interested to see his stat line after a full season is gone by, but right now I think its pretty solid with 11 in 22

That and he is playing against men now.

The case sounded familiar so I went back and looked at our draft preview from 2016 - when there were a few players who chose to take the A Juniors/US College route rather than playing in Liiga or Mestis.

The two most prominent players, Henrik Borgstrom and Kasper Bjorkqvist, both were eventually signed but have had mixed results to this point.
