How strong is Czech right now?

Hertl - Krejci - Pastrnak
Palat - Chytil - Voracek
Kase - Faksa - Vrana
Simon - Nosek - Kämpf

Kempny - Rutta
Sulak - Gudas
Jerebek - Simek

Rittich
Mrazek
Neuvirth

Good forwards, little weak backend and goalies.

Palat - Krejci - Pastrnak
Kase - Hertl - Voracek
Chytil - Faksa - Vrana
Simon - Necas - Kubalik
Kampf

Kempny - Hronek
Simek - Gudas
Sulak - Rutta
Hajek

Rittich
Francouz
Mrazek

Defense is an absolute disaster, goalies are good but unproven, forwards are ok with potential for more in the younger generations.

I'd say firmly #6 behind US, Canada, Russia, Sweden, and Finland, and closer to Switzerland than they are to the top 5.

No #1C.
No #1D.
No #1G.
Depth is only ok, not great.

They have developed some great forward talent in recent years, but it seems like they need to evaluate their development of young defensemen if they are going to close the gap (on paper).

I like them as a dark horse for the WJC, they should have strong goaltending and a forward group that can match just about anyone.

It really is a shame that this generation of forwards with solid potenital (Hertl, Pastrnak, Kase, Vrana, Necas, Chytil, Zadina..) probably won't be internationaly as successful as they would deserve because they won't have the needed support from the back. One Hronek is just not enough. And still no light for better days.

The defense is the weak side. Of course, one thing is, how it looks on paper, and other, how it looks on the ice. But I don't see any really top notch Czech defenseman right now, nor any young prospect developing into being one. Goaltending is OK with Rittich and a few younger goaltenders developing in both European leagues and the AHL. Forwards are skilled, can create pretty balanced lines. But the defense would probably hold the Czech team back from being really competitive with Canada, Sweden, Russia, USA, maybe even Finland. On paper, of course. We all know, that surprises like this happen.

Yeah Hronek is the only bright spot defensively. Hajek could turn into a good player and what ever happened to Dominik Masin? He was so dominant in Peterborough. Was super underrated. Played well for Czechs in WJC’s.

Russia some years back is a great example of how you need at least serviceable defense to compete. Elite forwards and very good goalies weren't enough for them (at the Olympic stage, I don't care about the WHC.)

I thought about Masin as well. Stat-wise he had strong year last season, this year he seems to have regressed.
The real blow to our defense is Zboril though. What a dissapointment. Not only does it sting me as a Bruin fan, watching guys like Chabot or Barzal dominate in the NHL, but also as a Czech fan. Out of all the defensemen drafted in the 1st round he is the one to bust. I saw both of his NHL games and he looked lost. Mind you, NHL debut, coming in a difficult situation etc... but at this point he's like the 12th defenseman in the Boston's depth chart and I doubt he becomes more than Kindl-like 6th/7th type of defenseman.

This team would never win the Olympics.

The "B team" for Canada, USA and Sweden is better than this chech team

Well, of course this team could win the Olympics, if all the players delivered their best performances, if the goalie was stellar, if … But I agree they would definitely not be among the 4-5 biggest favourites on paper. It is still sport, I can imagine even Switzerland winning the Olympics, with all their players doing their best and with certain amount of luck. This is the beauty of hockey, that You can predict nothing certainly. The results simply cannot be calculated from the individual statistics. It is so much about the chemistry and many other things. I remember the Czech team winning the Olympics in 98, where they should have no chance against Canada on paper. But of course, some results are statistically more probable than others.

All I can say is Hasek, Hasek, Hasek

Well, I remember that tournament quite well. The only game which was really all about Hasek was the quarterfinal against the US. The SF and the gold medal game were not so exclusively about the goaltending, or, better to say, in the SF, bot Hasek and Roy were great. The claim that the tournament was only about Hasek is rather a sort of a post-event legend than reality.

Yes I know. But if it weren’t for his godly performance in that game, Czechs weren’t even medaling.

Their development system has definitely improved over the past few years. Look at their WJC team this year for example. There are 16 drafted players that could make their roster. That's almost the whole team and some of it's pretty high-end talent. Chytil is playing in the NHL at 19, Necas and Zadina are high-end talent and Kaut is a very good prospect.

Defense development is clearly an issue if you look at their possible senior national team, but 4 of their 7 D for the WJC will likely be drafted players and Hugo Has is certainly going to be selected this year, so it could definitely be worse.

I'm glad the Czech's have figured things out. The more competitive hockey nations the better. Below would be my choice for their National Team:

Palat-Krejci-Pastrnak
Vrana-Hertl-Voracek
Kubalik-Chytil-Kase
Sobotka-Faksa-Frolik
Hanzal

Kempny-Gudas
Simek-Rutta
Sulak-Hronek
Jerabek

Rittich
Mrazek
Francouz

:Right now:
Rittich
Francouz
Mrazek

Kempny Šimek
Hronek Gudas
Polák Rutta

Kaše Krejčí Pastrňák
Vrana Hertl Voracek
Palat Chytil Nečas
Kampf Faksa Hyka

In like five years:
Škarek
Rittich
Dostal

Kempny Hronek
Šimek Galvas
Haš Kubiček

Zadina Chytil Pastrňák
Kaše Nečas Kaut
Vrana Lauko Myšak
Chlapik Hertl Kampf

Everyone here seems to be sleeping on Dominik Kubalik. I think he could be a solid 3rd line Nhler right away, with potential for more. I would certainly take him over guys like Hyka, Frolik or Sobotka.

If an almost PPG, two-way monster Hertl is our 4C, I say we are in a pretty good shape. :naughty:
Impossible to predict the roster 5 years from now, but I can tell this one is way too youth oriented.

Kubalik is great, I kinda forgot about him, we will see how he will do next season, because it seems that he will try his luck in NA.

How will the team looks in 5 years is unpredictable, agree with that, but I just tried to guess some players that can possibly be there in future.

Just missing a Hasek-level goalie and Jagr-level forward.

Also a top pairing.

Apart from that, though...
