Player Discussion Cutter Gauthier

Briere always gave me creepy vibes and came across like someone sniffing on the saddle of a recently-used kid's bicycle, figuratively. I don't mean no harm or disrespect, but if he is even remotely the person I envision him being (and IIRC there were rumblings from Buffalo during his playing career there), I cannot and will not criticize Cutter for his decision to pull the plug.

Cutter said it was a couple of things that happened over time. To me that doesn't sound like a contract thing or a dispute over AHL time or even a problem with the coach ... it sounds like somebody with or around the team does not know how to behave.

It probably started off with a contract dispute and then the summer gave Cutter as well as his family time to reflect upon the Flyer's org.

Let's say there was communication with the previous GM that Cutter would be signed after his college season ended and they were happy with him. But March 11, 2023 rolled around and in came a new GM, Briere. March 11th was also Cutter's last game of his college season. There were 16 games left in the regular season for Philly after Mar 11th. Cutter being 19-years old, would still qualify for an ELC slide rule, provided he does not play 10 NHL games. Therein lies the crux and the timing.

Philly had 59 points on Mar 11th and were 14 points from the last playoff spot in the east. They would finished with the 7th worst record in the league. It isn't as if they could not have used that talent to close out the season. This Sports Net article will tell the story of where the Flyers f***ed up. And, imo, it's a pretty huge front office f*** up to nickel and dime a prospect. Afterwards, have the audacity to say if you're good enough, then there is definitely room on the roster. WTF? There was already room on the roster to end the 2022-23 season!

And then there is this tweet/x-post, after Cutter was traded to Anaheim. Cutter took the high road and didn't disclose anything. He just put his head down and worked the following season to get away from an organization who did him wrong. The Flyers GM took the low road to paint Cutter as the villain, despite the obvious miscalculation on delaying the ELC.

Cronin and Clune really screwed Cutter's Calder competition. Grabbed a bunch of stats for rookies with more than 25 games played (since a few stats were skewed by prospects that played like 1-3 games)

In sum:

Raw points: 44 (5th)

Raw goals: 20 (3rd. Celebrini second with 25. Michkov 1st with 26)

5v5 Pts/60: 2.03 (3rd, more than Celebrini and Smith)

Powerplay points: 6 (9th, but guys like Hutson, Celebrini, Michkov and Smith had a significantly higher share of their points coming from the powerplay)

Powerplay TOI/gp: 1:32 (8th, but the guys above him in the scoring race had more time on the powerplay and didn't get stuck on the worst powerplay in the league)

Total TOI/gp: 14:09 (24th: guys above him in the scoring race played 2-5 more minutes per game not counting Hutson given he got more minutes naturally as a defenseman).

With an average powerplay and, say, 2 more minutes of ice time per game, Cutter could have flirted with 60 points even with a slow start.

With a couple more years of seasoning between him and Carlson and adding a true top line RW and he will put up a ridiculous amount of points.

Really puts into perspective how good his season was.

That trade looks like PV's crowning move so far.
