Hence why ahlers can never keep them straight

This is a serious pet peeve of mine. Obviously, no announcer is going to correctly identify every player every time, particularly on the opposing teams, but the frequency of Ahlers' misidentification of Ducks players is wholly unacceptable. Every single game he'll have multiple incidents and it makes me crazy. I know he's been the voice of the team for a long time now and the Ducks aren't likely to make any changes any time soon, but I wish there could be some sort of ramifications for his poor performances.

I watch almost every Ducks game and this does not seem like an issue to me at all. Yes, it happens once in a while during a game, but if you're watching the game, you can see the players yourself and usually realize when he's got the wrong guy. I would say there's on average once per game where he gets a name wrong and it actually jars me into thinking, for example, "That can't be Zellweger."

It would be great if he got it right every time, but I don't think he's significantly worse than most other announcers in this regard.

He and zell both do it. Hence why ahlers can never keep them straight
He can’t keep them straight because it seems he can’t distinguish the numbers fast enough. He does this with 7/9s and 4s too, Vatrano for Terry or Minty for Johnston.

He didn’t always do it, this kind of came on a few years ago. I was hoping the new crisper font would help him but it doesn’t seem to have.

I don't think our new numbers help. The numbers are a little weird. For one, the tops are too long on the 1's, it makes them look like 7's to me. I continually confuse Killorn, Vatrano and even Zegras a little bit when I see the from angles. Also, when the players are skating right in relation to the camera, the 51 and 61 do look pretty similar. The right side of the 5's and the 6's are exactly the same.

It's exactly this. Cutter/Zell is 61/51. I think he just sees one of the numbers and says the first thing that comes to mind. Except the players he mixes up don't even have the same body type sometimes. And he should also see the other players on the ice aren't the linemates of the person he's calling.

The non contrast on the new orange/white scheme doesn't help. I'm watching on a giant 4k tv and i still have trouble making out numbers with no contrast. I can imagine Ahlers up in the stratosphere of Ponda with old man eyes would have trouble.

to be fair, we only focus on Duck players, but our commentators focus on both teams. I don't even focus on the opponents and that makes it easier for us to notice our players faster. Ahlers needs to report on all 10 skaters all the while some of them swapping out in real time.

#1's
  • Dostal (easy to identify)
  • 11 Zegras
  • 21 Lundy

Thing is, does he always need to look at the numbers? I can identify most of the players, save for some of the bottom 6, simply by looking at them. How they move, their skates, who else is on the ice, etc….

Dostal is any guy with a 1 on his sleeve who catches a puck, according to Getty Images.
"Anaheim Ducks goaltender Lukas Dostal (1) catches the puck for a save during a preseason NHL game between the Anaheim ducks and the San Jose Sharks on October 4, 2024 at SAP Center at San Jose in San Jose, CA."

Can we get everyone to legally change their last name to Dostal along with choosing a number with 1 in it? It'll make life really easy for Ahlers, but also make it really hard to game plan against us.

Same, old habit from when the quality of picture was terrible.
