Cup Final Losers who outscore the Champs

If my math is right, the Oilers scored 5 more goals than Florida in the final series and lost.

My instinct tells me that losing a final despite scoring 5 or more goals than the eventual champs is a pretty large anomaly, but perhaps I'm wrong.

How many other cases of this are there? Again, I'm not not looking for marginal differences, but let's say 5 goals or greater. What the largest spread coupled with defeat?

Boston outscored St. Louis in the 2019 finals 22 goals to 18. Additionally, over the course of the playoffs the Bruins had a +28 goal differential to the Blues' +5.

just checked a few series that went to 7 games. detroit outscored pittsburgh in 2009 and calgary outscored tampa in 2004

No losing team outscored their opponent for 76 years, then it happened four times in just 20 years.

Sound like something (or maybe not), is it more or less common in non final series, say do we have it happening more than 60 time in the last 20 years )? finals being such a small sample it will be impossible stat wise to know I guess.

I looked at every cup final one by one, disregarded the sweeps, it would take too much time looking at the other series using this method. All I can do is pray that @pnep has the data.

Okay so my math was wrong. The oilers were 6 goals up, and it looks like this series was the largest goal differential spread without winning the cup in league history.

It was just a weird final all around, but I digress.

No, my math was wrong actually. The Panthers scored 18.

Okay, so it looks like the panthers/oilers set a finals record this year at minus 5, and the overall playoff record is an astounding minus 9 with the two Alberta teams being on the wrong end of both.

Well that's what happens when one cares so much about stat padding and racking up garbage time goals and points in a meaningless game rather than resting yourself for the long haul. You'd think the Oilers would know better by now but guess not.
