Crosby's still got it...he should request a trade to a contender

With a contender team, you can tell he'd still be a 100+ point player even at 37, instead of a 85-95 pts player with a below average team.

Crosby's not going anywhere, though. Staying a Penguin for his entire career is probably a key priority and motivation for him, and he has that "ride or die" mentality with this team.

No they didn't. Lemieux retired after like 30 games and the team was an absolute tire fire. Ziggy Palfy quit on the team halfway through the year because of how bad it was, pretty much all of the big name UFAs they signed (Gonchar, Recchi and LeClair) were terrible and the young guys were pretty much just Crosby, Fleury, Whitney, Orpik and Armstrong.

The Penguins got wildly lucky that they were able to get Malkin over the next year (they literally had to smuggle him out of Russia to get him to be able to sign) and got Staal in the 2006 draft.
Orpik, Armstrong, Whitney, Fleury, Malkin, Goligoski, Crosby, Letang.. yea that's not a bad group of prospects/young players to have.

Wildly lucky to get Malkin... you mean the Malkin they had already drafted? Sure it was tough to bring him over, but it's not like he was a UFA.

But most importantly, they had Mario & Co as owners instead of the inept Fenway group today.

All things considered, you'd be an idiot to take what they are today in terms of a rebuild over what they had in 2005-06. Ya'll have years to go before your team has anywhere near the young talent they had in 2005.

At the end of the day, I don't think many teams are able and willing to give the Pens what Sid is really worth. We are talking multiple 1st, 2nds and 2-3 grade A prospects
He's not worth that. How many teams even have 2-3 grade A prospects?

Nonetheless he's worth a kings ransom. You've gone a level beyond that.

This is completely revisionist history and showing you have a complete lack of knowledge of the Penguins situation back in those days.

They were lucky to get Malkin because his RSL team basically kidnapped him and forced him to sign a long-term contract with the team. The only reason they even got him to the US is because they smuggled him out when his RSL team was traveling and flew him to the US.

Don't get me wrong, the team is far more stable now off ice with regards to staying in Pittsburgh. But to say they're going in a better on ice direction? Absolutely not

That's not what you said, you said that they had hope for the future. At the time, it was murky at best. Yes, Crosby was fantastic, but:

1. There was massive uncertainty about whether the Penguins would be staying in Pittsburgh.
2. Malkin was effectively being held hostage and coerced to sign a deal with his RSL team, so they had no idea of if or when he'd be able to come over.
3. The money spent on those teams between Palfy, Gonchar, LeClair and Recchi all looked horrible. Gonchar rebounded but Palfy retired halfway through the year and LeClair and Recchi ended up duds.
4. They had a complete moron of a coach with Olczyk for a majority of the season.
5. They had no defense and they were trying their best to ruin Fleury with that.

Sure, they had some pieces, but to act like everyone was insanely hopeful with the team at the time is a complete fabrication.

Yea, hope for the future with better prospects. That amount of recent 1st rounders is far more hopeful than what they've got now.

They had Malkin's rights, he was coming to the NHL it was just a matter of how many years it'd take. Even a young Malkin as many 5 years away from the NHL is better than any prospect ya'll have now. Plus, you know, an 18 yr old Sidney f***ing Crosby.

You're also conveniently ignoring the shit for brains GM the team is now married to

He’s already won a Cup. This would be nothing like the Ray Bourque situation. He should finish his career in Pittsburgh.
He really shouldn't, it's a total waste of his talent and does nothing for his legacy.

If anything he should go chase cups for 2-4 years and return in a final year to mentor the prospects the Pens pick up from bottoming out. At that point, as long as he is even a decent 3/4C, he'd have a spot on the Pens.

1 1st round pick for every year left on his deal and you gotta find takers for Graves and Jarry too. If you win the Cup with him we get your 2nd too.

Crosby should stay in Pitt. Ovi should stay in Washington. It’s still weird that Marty went and played for St. Louis at the end of his career
