Scenario

Summer 2025
Penguins decide to blow it up and fully commit to a rebuild.

Crosby is asked what team he would want to be traded to, and he picks Colorado to play with MacKinnon.

What would the deal look like? What about with 30-50% retention from the Pens to sweeten the deal?

Multiple 1sts?

2 1sts for every season he plays for you. And if they’re lower than 20 you gotta throw in 2nds.

The organization and Sid himself have said on multiple occasions that he's a Penguin for life and that he wants to retire a Penguin.

Why even bother with this thread?

Tell ya what - 10 1st round picks, all unprotected.

For the sake of argument, in a scenario where Crosby specifically said he wanted to go to the Avalanche only (or stay)...would the value really be as high as people are saying?

It's not like there would be a bidding war or anything, and they would likely only be playing him for a year or two, assuming he wanted one final push for a cup.

Probably not. They would be doing him a favour

If we're talking fantasies......
If anything Crosby should go to Toronto, and end their drought. Now that would be a story!

Reality?
Crosby isn't leaving the Penguins.

Crosby won’t leave the Penguins. If he does, he’ll choose his destination and the price won’t be very high because it will be Sid’s wish to go there and the Penguins won’t have any leverage and won’t deny him if that’s his choice. Not saying that the acquiring team, likely Colorado, wouldn’t have to pay but it would not be the haul people envision when discussing a Crosby trade nor set the Pens up for the future. It also won’t happen.

I could see prices for Malkin or Letang or Karlsson getting competitive with a bidding war from contending teams, but if Sid were to ever leave, he would choose his destination and the trade would not be huge for that reason.

Is this the same organization that said they would be competing for the playoffs this season? Doesn't sound like they tell the truth.

Right because those two things are the same thing. Yeesh.

There's still time to delete your post before others see it.

Pretty funny for you to be so condescending when you don't understand the link between an aging star player wanting to stay and the competitiveness of the team.

Well, we are 1 point out of a wild card spot currently.

Because you've played more games than everyone else.

The Pens 0.429 points percentage has them 15th of 16, just 0.008 above my last place habs.

The -26 goal differential is also last in the league.

It'll never happen. Sid is a Penguin for life.

But if some unforeseen thing happens that completely changes things, and he does want a trade. Then the return would have to be significant. Even if he wanted out, management can't just toss him away for nothing. So it'd have to include something impressive.

The normal ask for a pending UFA superstar is a top prospect, 1st rounder, roster player. Add another 1st, or make it a blue chip prospect when discussing Sid.

We’ve played one more game. All the teams competing for that final WC spot suck.

We are not going to make the playoffs, but being 1 point out is being competitive for a playoff spot. You made a dumb comment to be snarky. I just pointed it out.

The Pens have played 21 games. The isles are in WC2 and have played 19, the Rangers are in WC1 and have played 17. Neither of those are 1 game.

The pens are 27th in the league in points percentage and 32nd in goal differential. That is not being competitive. I'm just pointing that out.

If Crosby wanted to leave, why would he have signed an extension?

He wants to only play for 1 team in his career. He has explicitly said that his idol is Yzerman and he wants to do the same thing Yzerman did with the Wings.

Does Sid really want to finish the Pittsburgh chapter of his life in the middle of a tear down rebuild?

He may want to finish his career on a winning note with friends like MacKinnon around.

I'm not sure Malkin would be much different in this situation than Crosby. I think they'd also respect his decisions and try to make a deal that works with him.

That being said, debating about the value of a trade that simply won't happen is a moot point.

Yes. If he didn't wan to, he wouldn't have re-signed like a month and a half ago.
