Crosby league leader in points at 5-on-5. Wow. (this is not talking about 6 on 5, 4 on 4, etc)

Pens need to say **** it and try and go after Marner so that Crosby can get another 100 point season in. Won’t cost any assets just cap space and they have plenty. It’s clear that Crosby doesn’t want to go anywhere else but he does not deserve to be on such a horrible team despite still being as good as he is.
Year right, Pens are managed by a monkey coached by a potato.

NHL points per 60 leaders at 5 on 5 this season. Enjoy these two while they're still playing - generational talents. Love seeing the old guys still dominate.

(and no I'm not turning this into an 8 vs. 87 thread that is so played out and tired - I simply saw them next to each other on the leader board and thought it was really cool an emblematic of the era)

Have seen some fans lately claim that scoring increased in 2018 or so simply because the players got better and nothing to do with goalie equipment, refereeing, defensive structures etc.

Other than the lack of substance to that argument, look at what 37 year old Crosby and 39 year old Ovechkin are still able to do in this league. It's insane.

Ovechkin was leading the league in goals up until his broken leg, Crosby has lead the league in points over the last month. Both these guys are very clearly inferior to their younger selves.

Yea, just like those that claim that the players today are massively better than those of the past, the idea that scoring increasing is purely talent-related doesn’t hold weight when you look at what they’re still doing 20 years in

Very cool and emblematic of the era because once again, Crosby rates higher than Ovechkin.

You’re welcome. :sarcasm:

I think Sid at 8 is even strengths points, these are 5on5 points? I couldnt find 5on5 stats on nhl.com, only even strengths which includes ot and 4on4.
gotcha, of course there are other even strength points than 5-on-5. duh. my bad.

does anyone know if an empty net goal counts as an even-strength point? I guess combine that and overtime goals and that would explain why a guy like Mackinnon leaps ahead.

Empty net shouldn't count as even strength. In most cases with the goalie pulled player numbers on the ice aren't equal. As long as you don't count goalies....

Empty net points are Even Strength, because the goalie is considered a skater and so both teams still have the same amount of skaters on the ice.

I agree with this one on principle, and would also argue that a 6 on 5 goal should not affect the plus/minus rating of the players on the ice at the time the goal was scored. I would also, however, say that it seems more like a solution looking for a problem as I don’t consider it a very important issue.

Howe has

801 goals
1049 assists
1850 points
6 Art Ross
6 Harts
5 Richards (if they awarded it)
Would have 5/6 Lindsay/Pearsons
Would have had a Conn Smyth or two
So that would be about 23-25 Majors

4 Stanley Cups
12 1st team All-Stars
9 2nd team All-Stars
23 All Star games appearances

All that while being more feared than Tom Wilson.

You don't f*** with Gordie Howe

This undermines even strength stats in a pretty needless way. I mean, yeah, the goalie is a skater, but by no means he is a skater like the others...

O.G.s remember having this exact same argument… but about how the league got better defensively because the players were massively better than those of the past.

Impressive at his age. But I feel like it’s dampened by the fact that he’s also racked up the most ES goals against amongst all forwards with 90. A list he tops all the way back to 2022.

He’s -35 going back to the second half of last season but this Pens team is very bad.

They’d be a lottery team without him.

Sid and OV in their prime would be running away with the scoring race this season.
